Event Reports » Derbyshire run 2008
Derbyshire is always a very happy, relaxed weekend, as are all the weekends but for me there’s also a tinge of sadness because it’s the last weekend of the season and we won’t meet up again until the following year. But while we are there we have a wonderful time and it’s lovely to see people who we don’t see at other events as well as the usual suspects.I arrived on the Friday in my new car, more of that in my ramblings and pitched my tent in a place I have designated as mine from now on. Suitably away from the morning early birds, set near the hedge for some protection and near enough to the thunderboxes without being disturbed by the doors banging, I was happy. That evening there were plenty of hands to help erect the marquee which is now a feature of Derbyshire and the main social gathering point in the evenings and after everyone had had dinner, quite a few of us met up there for evening mass complete with communion wine….
As usual Liz and Doug had put together a couple a lovely trips for us to enjoy, day one being a drive to Calke Abbey which we mooched round and had lunch at, enjoying the grounds, saying hello to the deer and other Marlin owners wandering round the grounds and house. After a respectable time at Calke Abbey we continued on through some pretty roads past places like Melbourne, Willington and Etwal weaving along in bright sunshine making it all the more enjoyable. Even I was topless. Arriving back at camp, others had arrived on the field and we had our contingent for the dinner that night at the pub. Later we came back to the field and filled the marquee with drinks and chat, some of us to the early hours.
Sunday saw us congregating for another trip out, this one with a little more driving and a different feel. Starting off we drove by Biggin & Hartington, Crowdicote, Parsleyhay & Newhaven. A quick toilet stop then moving on we aimed for Monyash, Taddington, Priestcliffe and Wormhill taking us to Edale, the start of the Penine way, for lunch. It’s a great place for walkers, cyclists and touring cars. Arriving there Liz and Doug had arranged with the vicar for us to park in a private area with rather slushy grass which was quickly churned up by the cars. It was churned more than it needed to be thanks to Ben and Lee who had been having
water fights along the way and ended up with Lee after his mud bath
each of them spraying mud over the other. Both cars looked like trial cars at the end and Lee was still picking mud out of his hair when we got back to the campsite.
