  • How NOT to modify your suspension !

Thought these may cause a smile or two - regrettably they are things done for real in a foreign country!

I love the idea of tennis balls to stiffen the suspension. There was a commercial version in the70's.

Should start a new thread, the daft bodges we've done to get home.
I'll start writing my list soon...it's long...

I used cable ties to get me home when the fan belt broke. Just round the crank and water pump pulley not the alternator, as I thought that would be too much strain. Drove half an hour home!

Re: How NOT to modify your suspension !

Back in the early 70s my moggy traveller collapsed in the middle of Wells Somerset, the nearside suspension leg pulled out of the trunnion block (thread stripped). A nearby garage let me use one of their trolley jacks and after jacking it up I completely reversed the working of the torsion bar suspension on both sides. So with the front end clearing the road by inches I managed to drive back to Bath with moaning wife screaming kid and in laws, well would you have wanted to hang around waiting for recovery with that lot in your car?

My Moggy dropped out of the trunnion on one side as I bumped over the 2x1 timber at the garage entrance ..... a few minutes earlier I had been exercising the right foot on a dual carriageway !

Another time, driving an Austin 7, the steering arm snapped whilst parking in the road

Another get you home trick when your wiper wheel box strips is to do this:
1 Park both wipers in their parked position.
2 carefully remove both wiper arms and not disturbing the wheel boxes.
3 mark the ends of the wheel boxes (arrow facing down)
4 undo the wipermotor from its mountings and undo the guide tube from the motor.
5 This part will drive you mad , by pulling the motor and drive wire out of the tube, you keep on replacing it in and out, until you finally get the motor back to its mounting position and the marks on your wheel boxes are now facing upwards ( or at least opposite to where you marked them) you are now running on the unworn part of the wheel box.

Does it work? my old rover went on for a few more years without any wiper problems, you just have to think outside of the (wheel) box!

Should have added that it is easier to line up the wheel box nearest the motor first, and then you can withdraw the drive cable a little ,and then in and out until you line up the wheel box furthest away from the motor.

I have a moggy pickup and i regularly grease the whole car maybe every 2 months as its easier than doing the repairs! plus mine has a 1275 and type nine gearbox so its quicker than the average moggy, I would hate for something to go at speed

It's ingenuity like that that made Britain great! So we exported it. I loved the electric window winder. Almost anything is better than being stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere.
