  • Steerring rack bush

I have been trying to PM Steve re a PM about steering rack bushes but it won't go 'Error 403 forbidden action'.
I got a steering rack bush from a company , Not Chris Weedon. and it turned out not to be the right size. I have not contacted this company because I forget their name and haven't bothered to try and find it. When I do I will contact them and see what they say. Then I will report back.
I contacted Chris Weedon who supplied me with the correct bush and sage advice and pictures in quick time. I recommend him.

    Re: Steerring rack bush

Hmmmm, my PM system is working received a couple overnight.

Somewhere on this forum, within the last few years, is the advice that HairyDave accepted in good faith. I recall commenting at the time that if it lead to a supply of Marina bushes it would be remarkable. It looks like I was correct.

Ideally that thread should be deleted so as not to misdirect the unwary. Hopefully the Original Poster reads this, tracks it down, and deletes or clearly edits it to remove the misdirection.

    EDIT

I have just done a search for the word ‘remarkable’ and have located the offending post.

It’s over to ListerJP2 or Forum Admin to take the appropriate action.

It seems to me, that this is a classic example of what I suspect, a steering rack refurbisher, taking a short cut, supplying a rack that will fail within a short time, as witnessed by several people.
    Buyer beware!

Excellent Steve, I will try and contact them today and see what their reaction is. Lister JP was not responsible for me dealing with them ,I was. We are each responsible for our own actions.

PS My computer still says Error 403

        Re: Steerring rack bush

I have read both threads but am not sure I fully understand the situation. Are the racks supplied by “Kiley - Clinton Engineering Ltd.” unsuitable? If so I would prefer to retain the original thread but update it to explain why. That would allow other members to understand that problem.

According to one web site “403 forbidden” issues are caused by misconfigured system files.

They recommend using a repair program. I have no experience of this program so can’t recommend it. Exercise extreme caution using any program from the web.

I also suggested in the dark and distant past, that the so called 'reconditioned' racks were nothing of the sort after failing to find any one of them who could supply the bush in question.
I ended up having one made to my dimensions at work.
As someone who has been in the role of Marina Roadster representative, I personally don't believe that such a position is now required. Most of the problems encountered have already been well documented on this site and solutions found. It only requires a little searching.
To suggest that other contributors have nothing to add of value is somewhat over the top.

I replaced a rack on Wee Beastie and took the old one apart to see what had failed; We are talking about the felt bush at the far end that guides the rack? If I needed to replace that part I would turn one out of Delrin or Nylon as I did when I replaced the felt bush at the top of the steering column. Honestly I couldn't see why the MOT tester was making such a fuss, the wheel turned didn't it? Who cares if it moves about a bit?

The BL Marina workshop manual covers the refurbishment of racks. It's mainly a job of adjusting or shimming the stout spring that pushes the rack up against the pinion and if I remember right, adjusting the pinion bearing preload. I doesn't look difficult for a mechanic.
