  • Fuel tank capacity

    Hi
Can anyone tell me what the capacity is of the fuel tank on a Marina based roadster - trying to work out how much I can trust the gauge!
    Many thanks

    Re: Fuel tank capacity

Unless it has been doctored to read correctly, but even then there is some doubt, I always carry a full gallon can in the boot space.
have used it several times when my right foot was heavy.

i think the tank was around 7 gallons brim full, but I always had losses from the cap when cornering fast which was low down on the drivers side, now relocated higher up.

According to Carfolio - 9 gals/41 litres. But I always thought it was less...if true my fuel economy is even worse than I thought :-)
Standard Ford sender with standard Marina Smiths gauge means empty is at about 1/4 indicated.

        Re: Fuel tank capacity

I have never managed to get more than 35 litres into my tank although I have never run it dry, close but always made it to a petrol station. I always thought the tank was 8 gals but as Jez has found all the books say 9gals, assuming you have the escort van tank and not a bespoke replacement. To get the gauge to read nearer empty on my car I installed a 15 ohms resistor( a tip from another member years ago) in the circuit between the gauge and the sender. This brings the gauge down to a more realistic position nearer empty.

I always thought it was 8 gals too! My sender unit is one where the marina rheostat part has been grafted on onto the escort fuel lift pipe. Seems to work ok.

I am sure my LWB roadster was about 7.5 gallons. Used to carry a spare can after running out more than once and filled up at no more than 120 mls.

                    Re: Fuel tank capacity

PKK 989M had a custom made tank and tweaked sender, obviously a wise decision as I don't ever recall having 'will I run out' episodes! I wonder if the car still has that tank, it was designed flush at the top so I had some 'boot' space but that meant it was quite low and close to the road.

                    UPDATE

Yes, it looks like the same tank, and wheels! are on the car! At least they were in 2011. You can just make out the square edges in these photos.

Looks like the original fuel tank I had made is still with PKK, and the Sprint wheels!

Yes it still has the same tank. The car belongs to my friend Eric Gordon. We wondered where the tank came from as its quite different fron the escort van ones on my marlins. I wonder what the capacity is? I always thought that the escort van ones were 34 Litres but are probably less now due to trials inflicted dinges

That's great to know, I was wondering where the car had got to, doesn't want to sell does he!

I did know the capacity, but memory has faded. If the paperwork is still with the car (it was a few owners back) there should be a receipt and if you are lucky a sketch with the dimensions. Being a box shape it should be easy to work out the capacity.
