Re: Apparent front wheel bearing play

Thanks for all the hints and tips they've been really helpful. I got an assistant to press the brake peddle and the play dissappeared so I'm convinced it's the spindle that's worn. I'll take it all appart and mike up the spindle and see how it measures up.

I've had a look at the Loctite products but only one (641) indicates that it can be disassembled for maintenance, I'm a bit concerned about using something that could become a permanent fixture!

From practical experience almost every Loctite product does not like heat above 200C. Acetone may also help. But in desperation careful use of an angle grinder and a cold chisel removes most bearings.

The question is, with a comparatively low mileage car, how often do you expect to change a wheel bearing?

Have you proved the play is on the axle outer bearing.

Not yet. I'm certain its in the hub rather than in the suspension. I've ordered new brake discs since I'll have to take the calliper off so I may as well change the discs while I'm at it as the old ones are a bit scabby! Once they arrive I'll pull it all apart and measure up the spindle to confirm that it is the source of the problem... hopefully
