  • Brake Pad Renewal advise please.

    I am about to replace my front pads on my Cortina MK3 based 2.0 ltr SOHC.Berlinetta.
    Does any owner know if there is any differance between standard ebay brake pads for £20 conpaired with Green Stuff at £40 ?, appart from price !.
    Also if so ,
    what differance and any benifit ?.
    Could I encounter any problems with fitting either by your thoughts.

        I would avoid budget brakes, the same as I avoid budget tyres. They are the only things in contact with the road surface that hopefully stop you before the accident.

          Hi Fred, no point boring you with a load of waffle. Bottom line is you get what you pay for in most cases as I am sure you have found out over the years. The pads are straight forward to fit, and when the front of the car is raised it is an opportunity to check the adjustment on the front wheel bearings, and the position of the flexible brake pipes from straight ahead to full lock.

            Me neither, I bought some cheep pads for an Astra SRI once and they only lasted 3000 miles and had a tendency to smoke a lot! Embarressing when I met a copper down a particularly windy single track road

              Ihave read both items, but still unshore.
              Looks like EBC Greenstuff 2000 grade, as MY car is light and only used on road streets
              EBC Basic, seams for normal heavy cortina type salon cars.
              Any views ?.

                A Belinetta will be significantly lighter than the donor Cortina or Sierra. The standard brakes will be designed to convert the energy of a moving vehicle to heat, slowing it down. So given that a lower mass, but same speed the brakes will have less energy to dissipate.
                If you were to drive in a spirited manner then Greensuff will deal with the repeated heat cycles better, but the standard linings would be fine for normal driving.

                  Steve's right, as usual

                  I would just add that if you go for harder pads you could have trouble warming them up to get them working properly. BTW this is why hill climb and sprint cars often use solid disks.

                    I used to be a stockest of ebc pads, I would steer clear of the cheep pads, can sometimes be very noisy and very poor. Standard ebc pads are very good or if you drive it hard then go for the green, both work well, and both work from cold

                          I think you would describe the green pad as the softer compound, but the std. ebc pad is perfect of road use.
