  • Mk1 Rebuild for Second Honeymoon!?!?

Hello All, Here "we" go then...............
This Marlin was last on the road uuummm 20 years ago + when I promised it for the 1st Honeymoon tour of Scotland - that was done in a ford escort in the end as the Marlin was still in bits. Now it is very much in bits. The rubber hammer is for hitting my head , Mrs M is already excited.... I've not said yet but I think 2 years until that 2nd Honeymoon ! Questions to follow ..........good to be back in the club.

Re: Mk1 Rebuild for Second Honeymoon!?!? Scale of the project

Have organised the garage now into 3 piles:
        1 Chassis
        2 Running Gear & Engine
        3 Big red bits
My neighbor says 80% of Rebuilding/a kit car is moving pile around & cleaning them!

Now to shot blast chassis , any advice for painting - what is the best primer/top coat to use ? Thanks Pile of Roadster 001.JPGPile of Roadster 002.JPG

We either love it or hate it, Hammerite that is and I fall into the second camp although the Hammerite of today is a different product of 25yrs ago. I think Paul Moorhouse recomended using Dulux gloss over his red oxide finish. On my sons stripped Mk1 we used ICI red oxide primer sprayed on followed by their Chassis black with a brush and that has worked very well.

Yes Ben, I agree that Hammerite top coat is way too brittle but I have found the red primer OK.
Mind you, I'm still using some I bought ?? yrs. ago.

Be careful because the new Hammerite thinners is not compatible with the old stuff.

Thanks All , my local paintshop for local people has recommended a primer based on "oil akyd resin thinned with zinc phosphate pigment" sounds impressive , too many decisions to make at this stage of rebuild , Happy Easter

Re: Mk1 Rebuild for Second Honeymoon!?!? Scale of the project

I originally painted my chassis with an alkoid-based paint. It did not react well when over-painting years later with acrylic-based paint but I guess it depends on what topcoat you plan to use.
