  • Gearbox HELP!!

    Hi folks.

Well thats us safely moved up to the new Hoose! in lovely but Typhoon like North Aberdeenshire! Sat in disbelief watching Wimbledon while Pam ran about the back garden chasing the washing that had released itself from the Whirlygig which had redlined at about 5000 rpm. Murray sweating his shorts off at 30 degrees while we froze.

Well at least the garage haven is coming together and I am once again tinkering with Q56, or possibly known to some of you as Tim MacDonalds old Roadster.

We had a great time at the Scottish Rally and cant wait for next year. Stewart, Gill and family done us all proud and I understand young Jenny is charged with organising next years run. Great stuff. It was great to meet everyone and put faces to the names. Seeing Ben doing the doughnut on the Helensburgh to Arden roundabout is a sight I never wish to see again as a cop! But officially sanctioned as hilarious.

Q56's Chinese distributor continues to work well and the new carb is just about there. Should be bang on with a richer jet as the carb is a new one and waxstatted for a frugal Marina from 1980.

The big problem looming is the Gearbox, 1st is banging away, reverse was possible while holding the lever forward and now that finally went while exiting Tesco's in Ellon this afternoon. So now no reverse.

Does anyone have a spare good box? The problem is the replacement problematical parts seem to be now unavailable for a rebuild. 1st and reverse and the baulk rings etc. Any ideas anyone?

I was chatting to the MD of a specialist gear cutting company recently who could make what I need but 100 of each part seems to be where the costs make sense. Any interest on following this path?

    Regards everyone,

    Scotty

    Re: Gearbox HELP!!

The gearbox reverse idler is the weak point of the Maina (Triumph) gearbox. To my knowledge there were three variants, but you won't know which one you had until you strip it down.
Most parts appear on the likes of eBay, some are available from Triumph parts dealers but you need to be able to identify what you need. There was a source of Marina spares in Malta, but I believe they have be bought up by a UK company.
I guess you are after 1.3 Marina parts, the 1.8 uses different gear clusters, including a different input shaft etc. the 1.3 should be the easier one to source parts for.
Inevitably any gearbox may have similar problems to yours unless it comes from a reputable source, it would be a shame to spend time and money fitting a replacement only to find the same problems.

Some gearboxes have been rebuilt by the Marina Owners over on fastmarina forum, perhaps worth having a chat with them.

      Hi Scotty,
If you are looking for a 1.3 box I might be able to help. I have one. I have been trying to do a bit of a garage tidy and discovered a surfeit of gearboxes, I have 3 spare LT77 boxes for the efi marlin and 5 1.8 boxes (I think they have been breeding), one has all the crinkly bits for first gear ripped off on Bamford Clough on the Edinburgh some years ago. I also have the 1.3 box off my first Marlin currently 1.8 (and with a broken gearbox courtesy of my son's efforts on the Yorkshire Dales trial) The 1.3 box was reasonable with all gears functioning but 3rd to 2nd required double decrunching as the synchromesh was a little tired. If you fancy a trip down to Hadrians wall it's yours for the taking.

          Hi Scotty
Have a look at my post of 23/7/13 titled "Marina drive train".
It references a possible supplier for you, if he's still in business.

                Chaps,

Must find the time to check the Forum regularly. Thanks to you all and Tony, yes I'll have that one if I may, sounds like a great plan for a trip south. I'm off mid August, would that be ok?

Another strange one for you ref carburation. I'll post on a separate thread.

                  Hi Scotty,
That would be fine, Weekends are best but any time in the 2nd half of August is OK. Do you still have my email address?
