  • Brakes, servos and inlet manifold vacuum.

In another place, we were discussing vacuum assisted brakes. Certainly on the Marina Roadster side of discussions, the subject raises its head every few months. This might be of interest, though not intended to be of a technical detailed article.

With the older carburated cars the efficiency of the vacuum system is dependant on there being no air leaks, starting with the typical SU carburettor, of unknown heritage, with worn spindles etc, and the vacuum hoses of similarly dubious history, there could be several problems.

Provided your servo is free of diaphragm leaks and it's non return valve, an easy replacement, are in good working order much of the rest can be bypassed with an electric vacuum pump conventially supplied for some Audi, VW and Seat cars.

It might also help those converting from carbs to injectors, or any of the other fuelling transformations.
