  • I have decided to finaly start work on the part built kit I bought many years ago

Trying to retire by the end of the year with luck, so propose restarting on this project, its a marina roadster kit thats never been on the road so will need IVA testing. The kit has been part built but will need stripping down and rebuilding so I hope those who have already done this would be kind enough to give advice.

Work so far done to this end.

Defender windscreen cut to shape and fitted with mark showing
    Windscreen profile changed
Wing edges thickened but need shaping
Herald demist vents fitted and will be fitted to 12v electric heater
I did cut and weld lower angled seat floors but they will need redoing
Have head rests to fit seats

    I think thats about it

One of the first jobs I will have to do is strip down the suspension and replace all the bushes as they have perished, thinking of using a full polly bush kit from morris minor parts firm or are they different from marinas? feedback please.

Thanks for reading this ramble I will try and upload some pics soon.

    Cheers

    Phil

Try againNotesfor Vosa IVA with old Marlin roadster kits

The first thing to do is some serious homework on what isinvolved and how much time and money is available.

“Kit car” magazine did produce a useful condensed booklet coveringthe main points of IVA but not sure if this is still available, however theVOSA IVA manual is available online.

The link is to this is < https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-approval/individual-vehicle-approval-manuals>..... and kit cars come under the category M1.

Have a scroll through before trying to read it fully thenrefer to these notes from me that are more Marlin specific. Can’t guaranteethat I have covered every issue but I have done my best.

Section...06.....Door latches..... The design of theRoadster door is such that you will need to source special double latched locksbut they are available from kit accessory suppliers.

12....Interior fittings dashboard etc.... You will need to ensure cockpit edgesand dash have a radius edge to prevent injury.

14....Steering wheel and column.......You will need to have an approved type steeringwheel and study the design of the column assembly to comply.

16....Exterior projection....The leading edges of the front wings and suspension plusthe windscreen frame and other sharp edges will need to have a radius or beprotected.

19 and31.... Seat belt anchorages will need to have recognised threaded feruleswelded in to take correct grade of bolts and the shoulder height from the seatto the top mount will involve either a very thin seat squab or lowering the floor(quite a straight forward procedure) to get the measurement required. Plus thelater add on seat belt tower to mount the bracket (There is a drawing for this(in technical tips) that would involve some simple engineering).

45....... Windscreen ....... will need to have the required markings Itis possible to get specialist windscreen companies to cut a flat laminatescreen to pattern but I am not sure if they can save the marking or re-etch thenew screen to comply.( You would need to approach your local vehicle glasscompany)
There is an opinionthat you can present the car with the screen and wipers missing but as on theRoadster the frame is integral with the chassis I am not sure if they wouldaccept that. It would be a bit drastic but I suppose you could cut off thescreen frame carefully to weld back on later.

You would be advised to take plenty of pictures of eachspecific stage of the build feature and produce a portfolio of the build topresent along with the car. This also helps with assembly points that gethidden by later work as well as proving the home build status.

Not sure where you’re nearest IVA testingstation is but it may be worth going along to see if you can have a chat withone of the inspectors

Re: I have decided to finaly start work on the part built kit I bought many years ago

more Plus extra comments from Steve Green and pos others I canadd a bit to this...

        IVA 2 extra

Section...06.....Doorlatches..... The design of theRoadster door is such that you will need tosource special double latched locks but they are available from kit accessorysuppliers. The things you need are called bear claw latches (available fromCBS) in two sizes. I have fitted these very successfully to the Romero(identical doors to the roadster). Dont forget to remove the grease nipplesfrom the hinges.

12....Interiorfittings dashboard etc.... You will need to ensure cockpit edges and dash havea radius edge to prevent injury. Make sure of a 19mm radius on the bottom edge- a piece of upvc sink waste covered in vinyl works well, check switches areradiused and bezels of instruments.

14....Steering wheeland column.......You will need to have an approved type steering wheel andstudy the design of the column assembly to comply. If it comes from aproduction vehicle (like the sierra column - inc steering wheel) this is noproblem, if not then the tester will have to be convinced that teh design issafe - appropriately angled joints etc

16....Exterior projection....Theleading edges of the front wings and suspension plus the windscreen frame andother sharp edges will need to have a radius or beprotected. You can fit edgetrim as long as its glued on firmly and isnt 'temporary' (cough). Check enoughof the wheels are covered.

19 and31.... Seatbelt anchorages will need to have recognised threaded feruleswelded in to takecorrect grade of bolts and the shoulder height from the seatto the top mountwill involve either a very thin seat squab or lowering the floor(quite astraight forward procedure) to get the measurement required. Thats going to be one hell of a project, and a bit of a leap into the unknown.

But to answer your last question, a search for Superflex on this forum will find a complete list of all the bushes avilable from Superflex.
          Other suppliers may be available.

A few random thoughts in addition to the above...

            - Windscreen must be E marked - the old BS857 marking is no longer accepted (as of April 2013)
            - Dual circuit brakes are required
            - Lift-the-dot fasteners cause projection issues so best not fitting those until post-IVA
            - Mechanical or electronic immobiliser device required in addition to ignition key

Certainly going to be a challenge but not impossible...good luck & keep us posted..!

A couple of pics of the marlin at present before I move it from my damp workshop once I have cleared space in my garage. As I have been self employed for the past 15 years the garage has been taken over with work stuff as well as bikes and the odd vitesse.

Looks like you have got a good size garage/workshop there and as lister says looks like you have a pit to. Best of luck with the project it may be worth doing a thread in the build diary section, either way keep us posted on your progress.

Yes that is a pit, its part of the reason I want to get started asap, it will be coming down in the near future as it is needed for access for a new development behind me within the next 2 years and I would prefer to have to deal with a complete car rather than loads of boxes of bits etc. I will be getting a new garage but in a different location. I can make space for one car in bits (Vitesse) in the workshop for a while with a lot of the other stuff. I hope to be able to fit an old 2 post lift in the new garage if I can find one at the right price and plan the garage with enough hight. My knee's would thank me for that.

                        Cheers

                          Hi Phil,
not wishing to poor cold water on your project but this is exactly the kind of project that could be impacted by the Road vehicles Improving air quality and safety- Feb 2018 consultation if the proposal is adopted.
Under the current IVA rules your engine will be tested according to its age but under the new proposal your engine will be required to meet the current MOT standards. If your engine is in good condition it may be possible to meet these if you add a catalytic converter and tune the carburettor to meet the standards. You'll probably have to budget for a rolling road session to set it up to pass.
The other issue is that linking it to the current MOT standards means it could change again in the future before you get to your IVA.

If you and any other members wish to object to this proposal then please complete the on-line feedback here....

You don't have to answer all the questions but Q15 (in the survey) is the one to answer.

...but you only have until tomorrow to do it as the consultation closes on the 2nd March!!!!!!

The more feedback they get, the better chance of these changes to be dropped.

                            Re a two post lift

Here (NZ) these are now ridiculously cheap - mine cost $2500 - brand new all taxes and delivery - about 1250 pounds

And they make you really really lazy! everything is just so damn easy with a lift

Re: I have decided to finaly start work on the part built kit I bought many years ago

Thanks peterx & Duncan, I am keeping an eye out at farm sales and garage retirement sales at present, some second hand ones here can get down to £200.00 sort of prices for good usable ones. More money to spend on the glossy bits.
I have been a bit side lined since the week end, Myself and Hilary went to Cornwall show ground for a car show and auction and among a roller, m minor, bmw and others was a 1996 Alfa GTV T Spark Original Red ( faded to many colours as is normal ) apart from a few scuff marks all the panels were straight, inside needs a good scrub and patch on drivers seat bolster, about 5 mil left on the tyres, wheels very clean but a slight knock in the engine (I was told later).
Hilary mentioned thats the alfa you have always liked isnt it, I quite like the look of it, your not going to bid for it are you ( that surprised me with the work I have to do on the Marlin I had not even thought about it. I don't have a death wish from the wrath of Hilary). Truthfully I replied it had not occurred to me, but I would not mind seeing what it goes for. Ok was the reply what number is it ? About 200 I replied. They are only up to about 40! I am getting cold and going back to the car, but life's to short, if you think its worth it you can go up to £1600.00 and off went Hilary. Oh boy that's a surprise, I had always wanted one but with the Marlin on the go had pushed the idea to one side a good while ago.
£1600.00 I would have thought more like £600.00. Never one to turn down an opportunity I started to think seriously about it. What if its a real hound, its at auction for a reason, could I make my money back on the parts if it goes belly up? Time to look a bit harder and ask around. Someone pointed out the seller and said he was doing up some barns for holiday lets and needed to downsize on the number of cars he had, so I had a word with him and that's when I found out about the slight knock, £600.00 is perhaps sounding a bit high so start again on the options.
If I am lucky :- Good clean up / sort blisters 2 sq in on drivers r wheel arch / home respray / perhaps a little welding / + odd parts £300.00 inc paint.
                              Unlucky :- Replacement engine S/H £100.00 - £350.00 maybe with gear box / Suspension - Brakes shot £500.00 + / Electrics playing up £ ? / Rust £ ?
                              If I have to scrap it, value of visible bits :- Sound system £150.00 / Wheels & tyres £ 150.00 / Front bumper £80.00 / F wings £100.00 / Rear bumper £80.00 / Bonnet £125.00 / Doors £100.00 / The rest £ ? Plus a lot of hassle.
It's number is close to auction, time to decide a price limit £300.00 + the 12.5% commission.
                              Starters orders £600.00 / £500.00 / £400.00 / £300.00 / £250.00 / £200.00 / £180.00 / £160.00.
                              My hand goes up, then a rivals £190.00 / now £220.00 / £250.00 / now £270.00 and its mine, hope I haven't bought a hound!

£308.00 with all fees collect documents & keys, go and tell Hilary and she comments on how cheep it is. As its Easter weekend I will have to arrange trailer and friend with towbar on his car to pick it up in two days. The auction hall needs to be emptied but the car can be safely left outside. I start it up OH Hell it sounds like a skeleton with hypothermia hiding in a dustbin. After parking the car and locking it up we drive home and I spend the evening on alfa sites and ebay looking for engines. My hopes were raised on finding not all knocking is terminal and start on a plan of action for when I pick the car up.
In this weather it needs to go in the garage and over the pit for a good inspection, just one problem the marlin is in the garage and over the pit, out with the tape measure, result I should be able to move the marlin over by the bench then the alfa may just fit.
One and a half days later the marlin is moved with 4 inches to spare and the alfa over the pit, lights on inspection time.
For a 22 year old car its surprisingly good, an mot advise on drivers rear jacking point needs about an 6 inches of plate welded where jacks have chipped the galvanising and rear suspension ball joints need new rubber covers. Wear on the tyres seems to indicate the suspension is working as it should. Inside other than mentioned problems all I have found is passenger electric window not working, bodywork has not shown up any more problems yet.
My plan of action for the engine is to work from the top down checking one thing at a time. Last belt change was over 4 years ago, so they will need changing as well as the variator. So far the only work has been to free up the variator solenoid and control valve which were seized (a day to free it up) engine is still knocking but with different sounds, so it must be progress! I will not open my wallet until I have a good idea of what needs doing. Belts and variator can always be moved to a replacement engine if need be.

I hope I have not sent you all to sleep or bored you stiff, what started as a quick post seems to have ended up a bit epic. I will post a couple of pics unless I get some objections about going on about none marlin cars.

                              Cheers
