  • Beetle lights on a Sportster

    Hi all,

Someone has an orange Sportster, Reg# BWS 733S or something like that, and I noticed that it has what looks like VW beetle rear light clusters.

Here's the car at Stoneleigh thanks to Patrick Short:

    and Peter Edwards:

I'm thinking of fitting some to my Sportster at some point, as they seem to be inexpensive and look the part. I just worry about them not being e-marked and then frowned upon come test day

To the owner (Mike Coombes?) - Do you have any other pics of the car, specifically from the side so I can see the profile of the light and the angle it sits at on the wing?

Also, did you fit these pre or post your SVA? if before, did the examiner have anything to say about them?

    Many thanks,

    Jason

The MOC message board *REALLY* doesn't like URLs does it? :-)
Here's those links again, unmangled hopefully:

In both cases you've added an extra word to the string. Make sure you put a space in after the URL!!!

I did. Each time. I even stuck several carriage returns to try and space it out.

You can even see that there's a space between the end of the URL and the following 'and' in the first post.

It's happened several times to me & other posters in other threads on the MOC forums - I don't think the message board software is parsing multiple URLs correctly.

But anyway - about those lights... :-)

Re: Beetle lights on a Sportster

I used emarked lights on the car for SVA, I've read repeatedly if you can prove they are bight enough then it's OK, I just couldn't figure out how I was going to prove it!

As for links on the forum, I've had problems in my threads too, seems even if you put a carriage return after a link it sometimes merges it with the next line. So I tend to put one link per post after the text now, Thanks, Patrick

Hi Jason. If you finally settle on the VW (tombstone) design rear lights, I have a pair that I took off my car. It went through the SVA with them on OK. Let me know if you'r interested.

              Dave,

Why did you take them off for? Did you replace them with something else?

              Cheers,

              Jason

Re: Beetle lights on a Sportster

Hi Jason. I took them off because I was never happy with the attitude of the lights from the rear(possibly due to differences in the rear wing mouldings). I changed them for the round (cobo hamburger) style which to my eye look better. However people following in a similar low vehicle complain of the brake lights not being visible enough. As a way of improving matters I have rotated the lights 90 degrees which seems better. My current project is a targa top, into which I will incorporate an eye level brake light.
                Regards David

                  Thanks for the reply David.

What year Beetle are the lights for? Are they the earlier ones with the metal base ('62-'67ish)?

I may be interested (if the price is right!) :-)

                  Cheers,

                  Jason

Hi Jason. I would guess that this design is from early 70s and they are complete with the metal plinth. They are 4 function (stop, tail, indicator & reverse light). If you'r interested ring me on 01629813478.
