  • LOS Mode Code 37 & 71? EEC IV Pinto EFI

Anyone had these codes come up, 37 points to MAP sensor. The fuel pump is not running continously as sugested in Haynes FI manual while in LOS mode. Going to check MAP as suggested in FI manual but just wondering if this is a common failure. We have only done a few hundred miles on EFI, so finding our feet.

    Paul,
I have recently gone EFi with my new Vulcan Pinto. After bench testing the AFM (The older vane type)I found that the carbon tracks were worn. A local company replaced the tracks and I have not experienced the faults you have. My system, based on a late 1988 Sierra, is not fitted with a MAP sensor or Lambda probe. My EEC runs the fuel pump relay from inputs received from the AFM - hence my repair. I wonder if you have a later EEC IV fitted. The come in a myriad of flavours - all called EEC IV! Mine is code CA. It is the very basic Bosch L jetronic system. After sorting out the idle (Due to Kent cam, big inlet valves and bored to 2.1) it has run faultlessly for the last 1350 miles. Looking forward to 1500; it is fully run in then.

Good luck with the system. It becomes much simpler the more you fiddle with it!

Sorry, The blasted mighty wurlitzer computer has come up with the "before" picture.
      Should have been this one!!!

Thanks for the reply, problem turned out to be low on fuel, giving rise to what I thought was limp home mode as I had to keep changing up the gears to overcome misfire, did this for maybe 10 miles. Have you fitted a swirl pot and if so how did you plumb it in ? The engine came from a 92 german sierra. I will ask my Dad to confirm type of EEC IV. I agree the more you play with it the more you are forced to understand what the sensors do and it is not that rocket science. It is a shame there isn't a better sierra forum to source ECU fault information, I can't get SOC Forum to allow me to register. What I would really like to know is what LOS mode feels like, is it the same as a modern car, 15 – 20 mph, if I remember correctly from my audi. In contrast with my wife's Saab there is a brilliant forum where I was able to diagnose a fault code, reset CEL uses OBD 1.

          Hi Paul.
I have a one litre swirl pot obtained from Burton which is fed by a high capacity solid state pump from Merlin. I went this route as my Berlinetta tank is an escort van type with no baffles. I also fitted a flip/flop relay to allow me to run the prime pump alone with the ignition switch in only in the "Aux" position. As our cars sometimes have long periods between runs I thought that it is a good idea to guarantee that the swirl pot is full before running the main pump and starting the engine. Otherwise in normal operation the prime pump is fed from the fuel pump relay.
The main pump and filter are fitted to the refurbished original Sierra external pump cradle which I have mounted just ahead of the rear axle.
Your EEC IV will be on the cusp of being the later type. Mine is from'88.
I have found the following (rather dry) information. But it helped me a lot setting up the system although the info is from the USA Ford spec.
          Try www.auto-diagnostics.info/pdf/ford_eectch98.pdf
It has a lot of goodies hidden in the blurb.
LOS in my version reverts to a standard length injector pulse regardless of what other information from sensors is received. I imagine that it would be a rather low flow and thus "limp home" would be apt!
The haynes "Bosch fuel injection systems" book is ok for an overview and their Fuel injection code book is good too.
I notice that you are using the Ford Fuel pressure regulator. I have just fitted an adjustable type which has allowed me to boost fuel pressure to a steady 3 bar. This helps if the engine is slightly tuned as mine is but does make an improvement on stock engines too. Merlin supplied this and the gauge too.

Good luck with it. The old Pinto is so bomb proof I love it!

Thanks for the tips very helpful. Where did you fit swirl pot ? Have to say EFI conversion is a huge improvement.
            Thanks

The swirl pot, which is the little black number from the Merlin or Burton catalogue, Fitted nicely on its bracket forward and left of the diff. The Berli uses the Atlas(in my case) or the English axle. Your Cabrio will have the Sierra IRS which may not leave enough room for the pot.
As I have an external injection pump, I use a solid state pump to fill the swirl pot. The return from the pot I have tee'd to the engine fuel regulator return. This means that with the system working the priming pump has less work to do as the fuel from the engine return can re-enter the swirl pot if there is room. Otherwise it returns to the fuel tank. You will need the higher capacity solid state pump to make sure that it matches the needs of the injection pump. I have had no problems yet!!!
