  • Incomplete/Seized B series

Recently taken ownership of a Marina based Kit with a 1.8 TC seized and incomplete engine. Any ideas where I can source a refurbished unit, or should I be looking for a more modern suitable alternative powerplant. If so what are the possibilities?

Pretty much any modern engine will fit in the chassis (Rover K, Ford Pinto/X-Flow/Duratech/Zetec...) but the problem you'll have is re-routing the steering column to allow for air-filters and fouling the pedal box. The original kit suggested standard engine choices of Marina B & Alfa Romeo Twin Cam from Alfa 138's etc. In theory your chassis will have both mounting brackets (mine does).

Changing the engine is something I've been looking into. The best option IMO would be to take a Rover K series, get the bell housing from Westfield and put a Ford type 9 box on and put it in the car. From the MG ZR (the 200 derivative) you'll get a 1.4lt engine developing 115bhp with a relatively modern delivery system and reliability. The problem with that of course is you loose the charm of the old car, both the sound (I know it's ineffeciency but I like the noise!), the ease of repair and the look of the engine. Oh and you'd need to do a heck of alot of modification to make it all fit.

Therefore the best bet (and the one I would take) is probably to source an MGB engine as there is an abundance of them available and they have good support and knowledge bases due to popularity. Some modifications would be necessary to the engine or car however (the engine mounts are in different places, it has different crank, backplate, clutch gearbox...) but spares are in abundance and there are common solutions to simple problems (it's a simple engine afterall). I've seen engines going for around ?750 rebuilt to order for the B and the mods aren't that significant.

A good guide as to the differences between Marina and MGB engines is available at http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgcc/sf/990303.htm. You could ask about for a Marina engine at http://www.morrismarina.net/, http://www.geocities.com/tal_glazer/, http://marina.spares.me.uk/steve.html... plenty of options.

... sorry! Tried to be a bit too clever with the link above, but I'm sure you get the idea.

Thanks Guys for your help so far, yet to speak to someone (at) morrismaria.net. However this one's for Matthew, extremely interested to hear more with regards to a replacement MG-B engine. If you could get back to me with a price, it would be greatly appreciated. Also distance is no object, this news is a BIG break through for me. Thanks again... Graham
