  • Tacho stopped working

I have just fitted a Pertronix electronic ignition kit to my Pinto engined Roadster, its very neat and was easy to fit. My only problem is that I have now lost my Tacho which I think took its signal from the points distributer. Has anyone else had a similar problem that they could share the experience with me, or is there another way to wire a tacho up ? Your help would be appreciated.

Check the disi wiring - on the Marina you have a red and black going from disi to coil and a white from coil back into the loom which feeds the tacho.
I'm 500 miles from the beast at the moment so can't be totally sure but I fitted an Ignitor (same as Pertronix) and it worked fine...and one of the easiest and best mods I ever did...

      Re: Tacho stopped working

      John,
I have a Pinto fitted to my Roadster using Marina wiring harness and fitted with a Aldon elctro ignition kit and my MGB rev counter works ok.
The rev counter get its signal from the earth side of the coil and this would be the wire that went to your dizzy (Bosch)with the points fitted. My wire colour from the earth on the coil to the rev counter is white/black ?.
The other white/brown wire on the rev counter is from the voltage stabilizer then goes to the + positive side of the coil.
I can only think you have removed a link to the coil when you removed the old pionts system or have a bad connection.I have checked several Haynes wiring and they all show as above for the rev counter operation.
      I hope this helps.
What size of Pinto and carbs, gearbox and rear axle are you using, as I have 5sp type 9 box with Marina axle and 38DGAS carb and it goes very well.

        Re: Tacho stopped working

        Hi John
I had the same problem. The tacho on my motor is the old 'smiths' type that takes the feed from the - side of the coil. Connect the red wire from the pertronic to the + side of the coil. On the back of the tacho there should be 3 wires 1 x red 1 x black 1 x green. Connect wire from the - side of the coil to the red wire on the tacho and connect the black wire from the pertronic to the black wire from the tacho. The green wire is the live feed. But be aware if you still have the tacho wired as the origanal wireing check as it may just be wired in reverse to above

            Tacho now working
Many thanks to Bob Jackson for hitting the nail on the head, your diagnosis was spot on, I had got the black and white lead on the positive side of the coil. Thanks also to Jez Cox and Bob from Grantham, your response was appreciated.
In reply to Bob Jackson's questions,my engine set up is as follows.
2 litre leaded engine not converted, driving a type 9 5 sp box to an Ital 1.8 axle. Carb is a 32/36 DGAV with standard Jets. I have not owned it long, performance is reasonable but like most car owners I am never satisfied so I am working my way through all the bits. I have replaced timing belt and sorted tappets out, now im experimenting with ignition timing.I would welcome a chat about what you have done to your engine, fuel additives and a larger carb. I will leave you my e mail address [email protected], if you wish please mail back your phone number and I can give you a call(I get free phone calls at weekends)
