    Wheel specification

    Sorry to re-visit this subject again. I have to change the tyres (they were manufactured in 1988!) on my Marina 1.8TC based Roadster with standard hubs and I would like to upgrade to 15" alloys at the same time.

    My 13" Weller steel wheels are stamped 13x5.5xJ.S.Lx16 and H.G.610. Apart from the obvious 13" x 5.5" wide spec, could anyone please tell me what the other letters and numbers mean? I know we need 3.75" PCD but what offset and is there any other spec I need to state when ordering?

    Don't suppose anybody has any 15" alloys for a Marina based Roadster for sale?

    Thanks for any advice on wheel spec and where best to buy.

    IIRC Marina wheels had an original offset of 1/2" / 13mm.
    Several Triumph or Montego or MGF's have the same PCD but the offset's vary. MGF's were fitted with a large range of designs but have a large offset.
    The only significant obstruction on a Marlin is the top of the front suspension upright.
    This measurement is 110mm from the inside face of the tyre and the face of the hub and is the 'critical' dimension as wider tyres on the same offset will make contact.
    This means that 185 tyres on a wheel with 13mm offset are ideal.

    If you do plan to use spacers to make up for a larger offset wheels you will need longer studs, preferably larger than the standard 3/8" Unf Std Marina ones perhaps by using 12mm studs and wheel nuts.

      Simon a picture of my car with 15" minilites with 185/55/15 tyres. These wheels came from Midland wheels services. They went on with no wheel spacers or extra length studs. However I do hunger for a nice set of 15" Stainless steels wires.

          Thanks Steve and Lee. Steve, thanks for your reply. I have read your report on fitting MGF wheels to your Roadster and, although they look brilliant, I am not sure that I want to go to all that trouble fitting spacers and new studs and nuts. I'm also a bit worried about misalignment and wobble.

          Lee, your car looks lovely and I think the wheels suit it. I know that wires would look more 'period' but I emailed Danny Nelson about wheels and he mentioned that he spent over £1000 on wires for his Berlinetta. Bit too much for me!

            Re-read Pitstop last night. The wire wheels on Peter Reynold's Roadster look brilliant. Now I'm tempted!

              At the risk of being a pain, it's me again. Only just realised that Midland Wheels and MWS are different companies.

              Lee - would it be possible to confirm that the offset on your wheels is 14? (assume you have marina hubs) Thanks.

                Hi Simon I am not sure what the off set of the wheels are and I can not get to the car at the moment as its in a carcoon, however when I contacted midland wheel supplies I told them what vehicle and hubs etc and they sent the correct wheels. Bob Jackson the roadster rep did the same when he got a set for his roadster. I do not live so far away from bolton why not take a ride up someday ?
                Peter Reynolds roadster in pitstop on the wires looks fantastic.

                  I was so tempted to push the boat out for the wire wheels from MWS but realised in the end that I couldn't deny my children eating for a month so have ordered the Minilights (Minilite copy) from Midland Wheels. For the record, the spec I have ordered is 5.5" x 15" ET14. Price was £360 including wheel nuts, centre caps and delivery. They assure me that these will fit without the need for spacers etc. I intend fitting 185/65/15 tyres (I currently use 185/70/13), which will give me an increase in ride height of 1.27in and an increase in rolling circumference of 5.2%, thereby increasing the gearing and reducing cruising revs. I will worry about speedo accuracy later(probably never!)

                  Thanks all for your input both on this and previous messages (search for'Ride Height'). I will post a photo when the new wheels are fitted.

                  Lee- be lovely to have a ride up to the North Lakes this summer. Just hope my car gets over Shap without the need to call the Fire Service!

                    Just re-read that last post and it sounds terrible. Sorry, it was meant to be light-hearted so hope you aren't offended Lee. Like everyone who read the article in Pitstop about your beautiful Berlinetta going up in flames on Shap, I was very sad.

                      Hi Simon no problem I had the jokes from the cumbria marlin owners like smokey grey marlin berlinetta for sale and are those seats you have for sale fire retardant. It would be good to see you and cant wait to see those pictures with the new wheels.

                        Simon; a minor issue but I have re-read your post and You have got your ride height figures wrong. The figure you have quoted is the diameter change. Ride height will be half that.
                        It would be worth checking your speedo against a Satnav, you dont want to get a ticket unnecessarily.
                        Assuming you have a Marina gearbox, it is possible to swap the speedo gear to account for the tyre change. Unfortunately the one you will need are rare and may be too big a step.

                          Oh heck! I used the MintyLamb site (http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/?page=tyre.htm) to compare the 2 wheel and tyre combo sizes. I can not get my head around the calculations but, on checking, it does state that the height difference is 1.27inches so you are correct. It also states that the rolling circumference will be 5.2% greater so am I correct to assume that my gearing will be 5.2% higher (if 4000rpm was 60mph then 3792rpm will give me 60mph with the new wheels and tyres or 60mph will become 63mph at 4000rpm) and that my speedo will read 5.2% under what it did before? My brain hurts! If this is the effect on gearing then there will be little perceptible difference in the driving experience but, the way I look at it is that I needed new tyres and wanted new wheels so going up to 15" was the way to go for me.

                          I will check with satnav and adjust my driving accordingly. Not sure how accurate any of our speedos are - even my everyday VW Passat reads 10% over.

                            Hi I have only just seen this thread, i put 15inch wheels off an MG F on the roadster last year, and with the 185/55/15 tyres that are standard on the MG rolling diameter is the same as 185/70/13s that i had previously. hope that helps

                              lots of good info (try pages 1,2,3 as well) and also has a nifty calculator or two. Personally I'd go for 60 profiles but only 'cos I value my ally sump..!
