  • Mocal oil catch tank

Hi, I have fitted these tanks to two cars now and have found the following snags.
The first is that after the screw filter cap has been on for a year or so it is stiff to remove and is very difficult to replace as the threads seem to have swollen causing possible cross threading. I suppose that they never expect the cap to be removed once fitted.
The other snag is the filter in the cap. I found that it doesn't allow enough airflow from the tank when the engine is working hard. It is possible to reduce the pressure on the steel gauze filter but this then allows drops of liquid through. I then discovered that the tank has no baffles. The two ½" inputs point straight at the bottom of the breather cap with the fumes/vapour taking the quick obvious excape route.
another large CBS tank has baffles to prevent this loss of vapour and liquid. I have made a baffle tube for my Mocal tank which slots into the top vent cap via an own design nylon bush. (this is why I had to remove the screw in filter cap in the first place!) The baffle is a length of 15mm copper pipe with 6mm holes drilled down the opposite side to the tank's input unions. The bottom of the tube sits gently on the drain plug. So far - no mess from the breather but I am disappointed with the Mocal tank. It looks great but one has to be very careful fitting the various plugs and unions to it as the tank threads are very weak and soft. I'll design my own one next time!
