  • Marina 1.3 Axle Breather

I have three Marina Axles they are all missing their breathers. The axle clearly needs a breather to stop it pressurising when it gets hot and forcing oil out of the seals, on the other hand I can't leave an open hole in the top of the casing.

What is the proper fitting and is there an alternative, like drilling lengthways through a bolt to create a tube, screwing it into the casing and clipping a short floppy plastic tube on to act as a breather?

    Any suggestions please?

    Hi Robert.
Not sure if it was on a Ford or a classic car but in the past I have seen an OE breather like the drilled bolt idea you have but with a recess turned in the external form (or you could use a washer) to form a rebate under the head. Then put a small metal "cup" over the top and crimp it under the rebate in three places. result is that pressure can escape but dirt cannot get in.

Note! - Make sure you drill the top of the axle tube just outboard of the main diff banjo area. If you put the breather in line with the crownwheel all the oil will centrifuge out! Hope this helps. Peter.

Hi Robert. Have a look at this link. It shows similar item to the one that I remember.

Instead of a bolt you may be able to use a bleed nipple and smaller metal cap? Peter.

Thanks Peter, brilliant! Just the inspiration I needed, I will build on that.

The casing is already drilled and tapped, there are remnants of something plastic in one axle, another has a bolt in to stop the oil leaking. The hole is just before the casing becomes a tube, so it's well away from the oil thrower Crown Wheel!

I expect the thread will be 3/8" UNF but I will check that first.

Pic uploaded OK, I can now see what it should look like! A small white plastic chamber with a black cap. Thanks Ben.

I suspect the plastic vents have been wiped off in handling. I will make a small metal vent like Peter showed, plastic is fine for production but not very robust.

Were Bump Stops standard fitment on Marlins? I have two metal plates which look like the one the bump stop rubber is moulded to in the pic. Might this be an issue in the MOT if I don't have bump stops? I had wondered about welding a plate to the underside of the chassis and using Land Rover style rubber Bump Stops fixed to the chassis.

Have reproduced pic because the link may fail after 90 days or so.

              Hi Robert

My one went missing as well.

I have used one of these and have had no problems over the past six years when I fitted it.

The bump stop in the picture is the original one from a 72 ish Marina donor. One rubber came loose stuck back with RTV . I Dont think they have ever come into contact with the chassis even with the way I pratt about or with the caravan on the back!! The only time they did anything was when the spring broke.

The Ford "Atlas" axle has a neat breather fitted. Have a look under the rear of a Berli and see if the size would fit a Roadster.

                    Hi Robert,
If you havn't sorted your rear axle breather yet, when I rebuilt my Roadster last year I replaced my breather with a brand new one from Rimmer Brothers which was a direct replacement. Can't remember how much it cost but I don't recall it costing too much!
                    Regards,
                    Chris
