  • New dash, why the cut out door side of column?

    Hi all,
Ok, just about to do some work in the cockpit area , new dashboard, multipugs etc and an amended heater distribution system(if possible)
My question is, why is there an apparent imbalance with the dash design, ie on the rhs between the steering column and the driver door is there an elevated bottom edge to the dash? I think I know why however others may have a view!
    thanks
    tony

Re: New dash, why the cut out door side of column?

This is from the Cortina based models. Using the Cortina steering column and column switches resulted in the arms of the switches being behind the dash. So a cut out was made and the stalks bent to a z shape to be able to operate. This is not required on the Sierra based models like yours because when using the Sierra column the stalks are forward of the dash. There are of course exceptions, some builders of the Cortina model did not build as the build manual etc. and done their own thing. One way was to lengthen the upper column, and of course in later years using a Sierra column instead of the donor Cortina item.
    Danny.
