  • Shoot Me !

    Gentlemen,

    Being a new member to the owners club (even though I have been involved with Roadsters for over 30 years and have many old copies of Pitstop to prove it, including my '1987 Marlin Owners Club'' sticker - hope it sticks ! it is evidently apparent, being a Newbie, that there is some sort of discord in the club.

    As such I would like to make the following observations as a Newbie;

    1. Website - excellent - great tool for owners.

    2. Magazine - largely pointless.

    3. Non old Marlin users - cannot see how it benefits them at all !

    I pay my subs, so just sharing newbie thoughts - however, anybody that dedicates their time to Chairman / Treasurer / Editor to any operation commands ultimate respect, nothing happens without said people.

    G,Day
    As almost a newbie,I must disagree I look foreward to the magazine every month and if old copies 90 -94 (the years my car was being built ) were available I would be buying them.Perhaps it is my generation but I prefer to read newspapers to screens and sitting down with a glass of single malt and reading the Magazine from cover to cover when it arrives is something I look forward to every month.

      Re: Shoot Me !

      Sorry Stormy, you've kind of lost me on point 3?

      Non old Marlin users?? Do you mean website users who own a Marlin and are not members, alternatively people who don't own Marlins but use the website? Either way I'm struggling to understand this particular point but that might just be me not getting the point....

      Either way, my ten pence worth is:
      I like the site, great place and I access it a lot.
      Although I've spent my life in IT (circa 40 years) and am well versed in online reading, I much prefer a printed copy of Pitstop. I like the build diaries especially plus the historical articles.

        I think an interpretation could be :-

        As such I would like to make the following observations as a Newbie;

        1. Website - excellent - great tool for owners.

        Self explanatory and I agree

        2. Magazine - largely pointless.

        Absolutely disagree and does he realise that the articles are written by the members, how about article from the newbie that shows us what the content should be

        3. Non old Marlin users - cannot see how it benefits them at all !

        I think it may be the fact that a lot of the content of both the web and the magazine is marina based and I assume he may have a YKC ford based or BMW ? However in the end its up to the members to create the content of both the web and the magazine.
        As for discord in the club hopefully this has resolved itself

          Re: Shoot Me !

          i would like to point out that the Magazine ONLY PRINTS those articles that are sent to the Editor.

          IF YOU DONT SEND THEM THEY WILL NOT GET PRINTED and thus it will be pointless!!!!!!!!!!

            Hi Stormy,
            Thanks for your post and your complements on the website. Clearly it’s intended to spark some debate.

            I have enjoyed reading your thread “Another Roadster Lives”. From that I know that you have inherited your father’s car. This suggests you are among the younger members of the club.

            For the last forty years I’ve been hearing that now we can read stuff on screens paper is redundant. I’ve heard Edison said the same when he invented the phonograph. For all that I find articles written for the magazine still hold my attention in a way that the web does not. Some articles have been originated on the forum but are honed to be more of a story in the magazine. I’m not convinced that is entirely an age thing. I’m sure the editor would look kindly on a short piece about your car and it’s owners.

            As others I’m not sure who “Non old Marlin users” are but if you can think of anything that might be of benefit to them I’m sure we would be keen to do it.

            Thanks for your positive words to the committee. Marliners are passionate about their cars and owners club sometimes there’s more passion than reason in posts but by far the majority of comments we get are very supportive.

            I hope to meet you and your car at a future event. Stoneleigh?

              Re: Shoot Me !

              Everybody could contribute, not just Marlin Owners. We have knowledge of Marlin Roadsters, the majority of Marlin cars, but we can also access the various donor cars websites. Several Roadster owners are active on FastMarina forum where they have full access, but for them to contribute fully on the MOC forum they have to be members, so they don’t.

              Younger readers may have outlandish ideas that have been tried before, searching the forum, with its rather antiquated search system does not help. With persistence though they can find a lot of data, but without membership, the library of Pitstops and club documents is restricted.

              Point 3. For me opens a can of worms, many people carry around a mine of information in their heads, on the forum they can only necessarily answer the question asked, giving a holistic answer is not so easy as many problems can be inter-related.
              If people stop being Marlin owners, their depth of knowledge does not stop at the moment they cease being club members, but their enthusiasm might wane a little.
              There is in my mind no benefit of terminating ex members full access to the MOC forum, they might have 30 years experience, that the younger members might miss out on.

              Finally, from my point of view, the articles in Pitstop, as Paul says ‘still hold attention’ but by restricting them to Members Only, in the age of information, it was Nicola Tesla, Edison’s rival, who first mooted wireless telegraphy, something that we now rely on both at home and when on the move, it seems absurd to restrict access to a valuable history, that could die with the club, if the warnings I read in Pitstop come true. All that history and knowledge will be lost if the MOC folds. Don’t we have a responsibility, first towards the club, but secondly towards the information.

                  Re: Shoot Me !

                  I too think I can fit in as a newbie.. Maybe a year under my belt now. I think the website is great, the forum is a community of like minds which help eachother with all manner of problems in the Marlin form. Sure there are occasional spats - but people are people and as much we all try our best to get along - now and again disagreements and incedents will occur; its part of life. As polite as we can be to eachother is the best way forward but sometimes our personalities get in the way. I am a member of many online forums and very very few have no incedents at all. I love the magazine; always a pleasant surprise when it arrives. Point 3 ?

                    Re: Shoot Me !

                    Paul,

                    Thank you for your comments, apologies for the delay, sometimes work gets in the way of Marlin stuff - most irritating !!!

                    With regard t my comments, I conclude thus;

                    I have been involved with Roadsters for over 30 years (I have photos of Mr P Moorhouse taking me out as a 14 year old racing around roundabouts with his 350 motorbike. No idea who won, I was too scared to look over the windscreen).

                    I do not have a BMW based Roadster, but a SWB MKII that I hope you will like when it comes to Stoenleigh.

                    My comments were only on the back of the following;

                    1. Distressing to hear, via the magazine, that such pivitol characters feel the way they do - the effort they put in is tremendous.

                    2. Reading the Pitsop Magazines of old, my father has placed a moniker on each one ( wipers,emissions, Sva etc ) my comment was only to say that maybe that structure is not required anymore.

                    Having been a Marlin fan for many years (and if anybody wants to go through the HS4 vs HIF SU carb needle configuration for SU, ie AAU vs AAF etc etc) please, trust me, I know know more than I ever hoped (thanks Dad!).

                    See you at Stoneleigh, enjoy Marlins !
