  • Heater for triumph car - polo perhaps?

Message originally posted by: Tiyen Miller
I'm looking into options for installing a heater into my triumph based roadster. My engine compartment is pretty crowded, however, and I'm not sure what the best apporach might be.

The battery is centrally located in front of the bulkhead (photo), and it seems that that might be a reasonable place to put a polo heater box/blower (they're apparently small - about 8"x8"x11.5&quot I can't imagine where I'd put the battery in that case, though. The space above the steering column by the bulkhead only has about 6 inches vertical clearance to the bonnet - could I get some kind of battery in there? I think I mini core would never fit - any suggestions?

Thanks for your ideas in advance!

    Cheers,
    Ty

what about putting the battery OS under the dash against the bulkhead? or you can also put the battery behind the seats and get a long starter cable to the starter. Than properly connect the engine to the chassis and connect the chassis to the - on the battery.
      godo luck,
      Geert

Beste Geert, thanks for the ideas!

Unfortunatlely, there's no space under the dash, as the passenger's side has a glove box, and there's the steering column and pedals, etc on the right side. Not enough space behind the seats, either, I'm afraid, as I store the top back there...

I might have a solution, though - to move the battery forward and down a bit, so it sits in some sort of bracket above the bellhousing. (picture) Then there should be a bit more room to work with to put a heater core and blower where the battery used to be...

What heater set ups are other people using?

        Regards,
        Ty

On my Roadster the heater is bolted to the cabin side of the bulk head up behind the dashbroad.
It appears to be home made but works fine for all that
I might be able to get a photo if needed

What's a heater? the best way to enjoy a roadster is with the top down, so if it gets cool, put another sweater on, if it gets cold, put a fleece on, if it's mid-winter put a wooly hat and gloves on, if it rains, well it's better than riding a bike

I've got gauges up there in the centre so it's pretty tight, but that's good idea. (photo) What type of heater core are you using that will fit in that odd-shaped and small space? If you could post up a photo that would be very interesting - cheers. I'm just open to all sorts of ideas at this point. Thanks!

Cheers Ian, good points... That\'s been my logic for the last 6 years with the car, but I figure this might be the season... That and being able to drive in the cold rain with heated de-misters would be a bonus instead of using the tried and true \"buddy-with-a-towel-reaching-accross-mopping-the-screen-as-I-drive\" system...

                We\'ll see...

How about putting the battery in a cradle where the ignition coil now sits.Is there room there, if so it shouldn't be difficult to find room for the coil elsewhere ?

No room there, unfortunately. Good idea though. What are some good leads as to suitable battery cradles that might work - or am I best off just fabricating something out of sheet aluminium?
                    Cheers, Ty

Re: Heater for triumph car - polo perhaps?

I designed and built a heater box to fit centrally up behind the dash and includes flaps to divert to cabin or windscreen. I used the matrix and blower from my Sierra donor and it works perfectly. The plans are in an old Pitstop from several yeasr ago (Sorry - can't remember which one - perhaps someone can help out if you are interested)

I'd definately be interested in seeing how you've made a plan to fit a heater under there, thanks for the idea. It really seems crowded to me, esp with the glovebox.

If anyone might be able to give me a hand finding the plans in the old pitstop issue, that'd certainly be appreciated. I've only got the issues from 2001-2003 at the moment, as my membership lapsed when I moved overseas for a while. But my check went off to Tim Hawkesworth today to get back on board, now that I'm on the road again... Cheers to the MOC!

Re: Heater for triumph car - polo perhaps?

I have found the original pencil sketches if you are interested. They are a bit faint but I can email scans of them if you let me have your email address. I don\'t have the original article but they may give you some ideas on how to proceed. I used the central Sierra plastic vent panel with its sliding controls to bring heat out to the cockpit and I cut 2 very thin slots in the panel below the windscreen for that outlet (with fantails bolted underneath the slots so all you see is 2 stainless capheads either side of each slot). You are quite right in that it is tight. I had to make some fibreglass ducts to bring the air from the top of the heater tothe front. Being very efficient it has helped me get rid of engine heat on more than one road block occasion but that\'s another story

Cheers, Keith - thanks. I'm looking forward to seeing how it can be done. drop me an email at t( at )tiyen.com when you've got a chance. Mind you, my car's a triumph based car, and I'm not sure how similar or differnt the under-dash situation might be. But all ideas are gratefully received. cheers.

I am about to move my battery (again). I am having an exterior battery box made which will mount through the offside running board. Depends how much of a purist you are with regards the outside appearence of your car.
