  • Numb bum...

    Hi, hope you're all well!
Whilst I'm not going anywhere soon, I'm thinking of replacing the original foam in the seat bases of my Roadster. After about 50 miles or so I tend to get a numb bum. They've lasted well, and I'm happy with the seats, they suit me fine as I'm only a short a..e!
I was hoping to get to Stoneleigh and get some suitable foam but obviously that's not going to happen.
So my question is, can anyone recommend a comfortable type of foam and a supplier please?
    Cheers,
    Gareth.

While looking for info on foam for another project I stumbled upon these two websites which may be of interest. The first is about foam. Not all foam is the same!

The next is about trimming tips. Worth reading about the upholstery stuff before you start! 😉

        Re: Numb bum...

        Hi Gareth.
I also suffer from the same problem with my original Roadster seats. I recently took my seat base to a very well respected upholsterer.
The problem is at the rear part of the seat cushion, you will see witness marks from where your sitting on it.
He undid some of the staples and there is an extra 1" folded over of the seat vinyl on itself .
So there is scope to add the extra foam without changing the covers

The plan is to put an extra layer of reconstituted chip foam(same as what is already in there) just in the area where your bum rests on and then blend the shape of the foam going forward with his foam cutting knife.

An electric meat carving knife will also work to cut the foam, if you are going to do this yourself.
He recommended using that type of foam as it is the most supportive of the types of foam available. It just needs building up a bit with extra foam in that area.
Hopefully these will be done in the not to distant future.

          Re: Numb bum...

Update...I've found a place on eBay selling the same type of foam pads as in the original seats, ie, reconstituted foam topped with 1 inch of high density foam, as used in bar stools etc.
They've cut it to size and cost under £20 for the two, including postage.
But, whilst I'm doing this, has anyone got an original spare seat pad in black. When I got the car, there was what looks like a cigarette burn mark in the middle of the seat. I don't need the whole seat, just the pad.
          Cheers, Gareth.

Hi Gareth, I don't remember but, have you tipped your seats back? I have a 2"/50mm wedge on mine. I also put a hinge under so I can tip it forward to get at the luggage space.

              Re: Numb bum...

I had to take my wedge out of the drivers seat to give me sufficient legroom to drive the car. Unfortunately a SWB Roadster is exceptionally tight on leg room for anyone over 5ft 10".

With the wedge removed the drivers seat can move back further,as its now upright. This I guess contributes to the numb bum or as some would refer to it as Marlin's Bum.

I also had to install a 10" steering wheel.
I can at least advise that the steering is now perfectly weighted (not too heavy) and very quick to respond to steering movements.

                Re: Numb bum...

Hi Dave, yep, the seats are tipped back with a 2 inch block and the drivers is on a runner so can be moved as well, since the wife's a short a..e!
I find them quite comfy, but that's 'cos I'm a short a..e too!
If anyone has a spare seat base knocking around, please let me know, cheers!
                Gareth.

Over 5-10? it's not roomy for 5-8. I tried it flat and got cramp and I prefer a bigger steering wheel, even if you do have to whirl your arms at times. The other thing is I have a piece of foam pipe insulation on the hood stick to rest my head on.
Sorry, Gareth no spare seat base.

                      Re: Numb bum...

We'll, seats all done, and very comfy too, if I may say so!
If anyone is thinking of just replacing the foam cushioning then 2 pieces, 18in x 14in of 3in thick composite with a 1in topping of high density foam is what I've used off eBay.
Should be able to get to the caravan in Anglesey in one go, should they ever let us back into Wales...

Hi, here's the item no on eBay,
                          133392831747
They'll cut it to size and relist with that size. You'll just need to trim the rear corners and take a bit at the front to fit in the seat moulding. But they'd probably do that for you if you ask.
Took the car out for a longish drive yesterday and found the seat a million times more comfortable, sitting about an inch higher which for me is no problem!
                          Cheers, Gareth.

                              Hi Gareth
Re:"If anyone is thinking of just replacing the foam cushioning then 2 pieces, 18in x 14in of 3in thick composite with a 1in topping of high density foam is what I've used off eBay."

I measured my existing reconstituted foam yesterday and it measures 2 inches not the 3 inches you have stated.
Therefore with my seats I would need 2" of reconstituted with the 1 inch of High density foam on top.
Which equates to a total of 3 inches thickness of foam.
Can you confirm if this is what you actually ordered please and not 4" ?
                              Thanks.
