    Re: Non-starting problem

Great idea. Thank you. I'll call into my Aldi tomorrow on the way home and see if I can pick some up.

    Re: Non-starting problem

    Thanks Ed.
It's been running fine. Only gets just above 90 degrees when stuck in traffic and then rarely hits 100 degrees.
I've also been running with cooler plugs.
I was wondering if there was...

    Re: Non-starting problem

My poor photo I'm afraid Steve.
The lefthand ones are 12 spline, the right-hand are Torx.
Head is off and thankfully only a gasket required, which I will order this afternoon.

Spline drives borrowed from a work colleague.
    Tomorrows tasks:
    1. Drain coolant.
    2. Remove inlet manifold etc.
    3. Remove cylinder head.

    Re: Non-starting problem

Thanks. What do you mean by "no need to touch manifolds" please?

I was going to take the inlet manifold off complete with all hoses and carbs, then hang it on the side whilst I worked on the...

    Re: Non-starting problem

It has all been binned. By the time I had managed to unwrap it my arms were covered in itchy fibreglass hairs.

    Not going there again.

This is what the bolts looks like:

I assume the splined bolts would have the "teeth" on the outside making these Torx 55?

    Re: Non-starting problem

I haven't, but as it is two adjacent cylinders with the same compression reading, I assumed the instruction sheet would be correct when it stated gasket or cracked head.

    Re: Non-starting problem

Thanks Andy. I've sent the Accuspark unit back now that it appears to be compression related, rather than ignition. I'll definitely look at alternative before I purchase again.

    Re: Non-starting problem

Thanks Paul, I'll start taking the car apart this evening, all being well. Then I can see what type of bolts I have.

The engine is 1979 vintage, but it was rebuilt around 2000, so they might...

    Re: Non-starting problem

The compresson tester I ordered arrived tonight, so I checked the engine.

Cylinders 2 & 3 are only registering 20psi, which according to the instructions indicates a failed gasket or cracked...

    Re: Non-starting problem

That's really interesting. My car has an Accuspark unit fitted in 2014. It is coupled to a blue (ballast) coil. Both the red and black leads go to the coil.

When I changed the coil a while...

Tonight I managed to get the car running, after a fashion.

I connected a jerry can of Shell V-Power and checked that the fuel pump was working,

Then I retarded the ignition slightly and...

    Re: Non-starting problem

Thanks both. I'll check the hoses tomorrow, but there was plenty of fuel at the carb and in the (see through) fuel filter. The float chanber was also full.

    Re: Non-starting problem

I checked the timing and it appears to all be correct, the rotor arm, timing marks and #1 piston all seem to be where they should be.

Then I tried putting a bit of fuel into the carb by twisting...

    Non-starting problem

Driving to work this morning, I thought at first something had broken off inside the silencer; very loud and a tinny sort of rattling when I tried to accelerate.

    Luckily there was a roundabout...
