      Some electric fuel pumps even those designed for carbs, deliver too much pressure, mine (Twin SUs) flooded repeatedly after a fast run as the floats would not reseal the needle against the flow. Result petrol all over the road. Eventually I fitted a fuel regulator/filter from Holden.

        There are several threads on fastmarinamagazine regarding probems with fuelling with mechanical pumps. Almost all have been solved by fitting a new pump. There are suggestions that he internal seals are being damaged by the higher levels of ethanol in modern fuels. Most of the pumps will be 30 years od, no wonder they are tired.

            Update (username was temporarily 'mail' - few forum login issues hopefully now sorted):
            Fitted the Webcon low pressure (2.5-4.5 PSI) universal fuel pump, sold as suitable for all Webber carbs. Impressed with it so far good flow and seems fairly quiet when pumping. Mounted it engine rather than tank end but near the bottom of the bay as far as practical from the engine. It seems to pump happily and should not get too warm I hope.
            Unfortunately, ended up with fuel all over the engine as the float switch did not cut in properly. Tried adding a fuel regulator set to minimum but the carb is still overflows so I assume the issue is with the switch condition or setup rather than the pressure from the pump. The regulator is probably not needed. Suspect that the switch may coped with the (failing?) mechanical pump but is not fit for 'proper' fuel flow.
