Any recommendations of how to eliminate fumes from petrol tank overflow pipe on escort van tank fitted to a berlinetta, whist inside garaged parked ?. Pipe at presant is a streight metal original one, hanging down side of tank facing ground.

    Hi Fred,
that's what I thought was wrong with mine, but it turned out to be the petrol pipe from tank to carb, it was rubber all the way, and on every bend it was cracked and damping on the pipe. Hope this is of some help.

      Re: petrol fumes

Fred, have a look at the post "Whiffs of petrol" from 2008. We chatted about the snag then and tried to come up with suitable mods.
Good luck with it but don't smoke near the tank!

As Terry says its more likely to be the fuel line. The breather pipe should have a rubber pipe run higher than the top of the tank before turning down so that a full tank doesnt slop over.
Also check the filler neck as this is on the side of the tank. I try to avoid (roadster uses same tank) putting the car away with a full tank. I also find the heat of the engine vapourises the fuel in the carbs and that also smells for a while. Leave the garage door open for an hour if you can.
Ben Caswell probably not the last word on anything here!!

          Re: petrol fumes

          HI,
Thanks for comments, note petrol pipe feed is plastic end to end no tears or brakes. The fumes are directly out of overflow/breather pipe below car and only 2 gall in 7+gall tank.
However this pipe is metal all way back to tank and does not curve up at any point !. So will try replacing run to curve as bexly said or put a loop on it which may create a vapor trap !. Will advise.

              Re: petrol fumes

Hi Fred, not sure about Berli cars, but a number of the 5exi and Sportster builders use a Mocal Fuel Tank Breather Valves. They come in varius types of fittings from Merlin Motor Sports. They also cut off the fuel if the car should ever over turn. Not something any of us want to test but a nice peace of mind and helps justify the quite high price. They do need to be mounted vertically. I have one on my Sportster and the car is kept in my garage which is integral to my house. Never smelt any fuel fumes at all.

                Fred

The Cabrio uses a Sierra Tank breather valve - very simple: easy to find, and cheap. Have a look under Cabrio forum - Peter Morris posted a very useful guide.

                  Hi All,
                  Thanks for info.
Have fitted a small alumium check one way valve into breather pipe outlet in vertical position.
This alows air in but nothing out !. No more fume problems.
Valve sorced on Ebay and is being advertised for use on oil check equiptment as wel as air, and its cheap !.
                  Thanks for help. Fred.
