  • AFM (Air flow meter) mounting BMW E30

I would be interested to know how others have mounted their AFM. If you try to mount it in the (standard) position as dictated by the inlet to the throttle body it's clearly gonna be hanging out the engine bay!
Also what is generally being used for the filter. The BMW one is huge and ain't gonna fit. What about one of the K&N induction kits?

    Cheers

I had to overcome these problems with the BMW engine instalation in my cabrio. Take a good look at my artical's and photo's in pitstop.Briefly you have to rotate the airflow meter 90 degrees and make/buy an adaptor to fit a cone type filter. Alternately phone me 1 evening and I will try and help.

      Thanks Peter
I thought I might have to do that but I was concerned abiout the AFM working properly if I rotated it (gravity on the flap) I guess if it works in yiours it isn't a problem. I haven't got the pitstop in question so I will probably give you a ring some time in the next few weks when I return to that side of the engine (working on the exhaust at the moment)
      Cheers

                    Hi guys
More info for you. The filter I used is a jetex filter part number fr-06502 which was ordered from halfords at reading.
Adaptors for conical filters are available from demontweaks and are known as "top hat" adaptors plus there is a specific bosch one listed in this years catalouge.
Had another go at reducing pics today.

                      Thanks, Peter.
Your pictures have been most helpful. I see you've mounted the AFM on a rail, along with the relays. Is that a Marlin provide part or is a 'special' made by yourself?
Also, have you had any problems with the AFM working at 90 degrees to normal?

                        Peter
Rail was made from a bookshelf sloted rail from B&Q with
                        plates welded to the ends.
Don't worrry about the airflow angle it makes no difference.

Not realy the place to put these as my car is a cabrio, but here's 2 more pics for you. Can't do many more as the file sizes for most of my pics are far too big and I don't have the right software.
