        Re: Cameron's Romero Build

Well this weekend I finally got a bit of time so into the garage I ventured. One of the things that was worrying about was bumpers and the IVA manual is kind of nebulous once again on that point. I managed to get hold of some mini quarter bumpers which have nice curves and, importantly curl back on themselves so they should meet IVA requirements.
To mount the front one I took a bit of 2x1 box, chopped a couple of extended outriggers and made a new front beam. Glued it together with the welder and then added a couple of bits on the ends to carry the new bumpers. That left a nice gap in the middle for a number plate holder. NOw onto the back bit.

Cameron, try this for size, V8 in a YKC Sierra roadster - very tight fit. I had to move the radiator into the nose cone and shorten the pulley shafts to the absolute minimum plus a custom made exhaust system. One problem is that you have to take the front of the car off to get the engine out (hopefully not too often). Mikes comment about photo's is so true.
Your Romero is looking good, I hope to see it at some shows next year.

          All the best Michael

            Re: Cameron's Romero Build

next year? hmmm (laughing my socks off).
Well this weekend I have sorted out the front apron, made a new front chassis cross member to attach two mini quarter bumpers and a number plate plinth then went round to the rear and made a couple of brackets to mount yet another pair of mini quarter bumpers. A piece of 1" square was welded across to mount the number plate lamps and another plinth. Hopefully will get the lights all wired up in the next few days to check it all works. Next job the windscreen, then some body prep. After that will be the boot floor, a couple of seats and a bit of carpet and hey ho IVA will be easy.

                Re: Cameron's Romero Build

Time for a quick update. I have put the red Roadster away in the garage that was occupied by the Romero and build a new shed for the Romero. Bit more room too. Next job is to get some glass. I know I have mentioned this before but now is the time. I had a reply from pilkingtons who said they will make me one for £130+vat (£156) but it may cost more depending on its complexity. So that's my target to beat. If anyone knows anyone who can cut/ supply I will be grateful. The thing must be marked E43R.
Meanwhile I have started rubbing down the grp and am now building up the edges of the panels so they look like they were meant to go together. The bonnet edge varies between 1/4" and 1/2" gap at the scuttle - just bad trimming I guess.
I still don't have the all elusive grille surround.
So once I have the screen and the grille surround I can prep for paint.

Hi Cameron is the screen flat? and do you want it toughened or laminated? Cheers Dave.

                      Re: Cameron's Romero Build

Given the quality of the red roadster I'm sure this will look a cracker as well but every time I see a Romero it makes me wonder if all those changes to the front end couldn't have helped sales as in my mind the Marlins front end was iconic and the reason many people bought them.

Is it easily possible to put a Marlin front on a Romero?

Remember if it is going through IVA the glass needs to be etched with the approved E mark

Hi Cameron, I seem to remember someone telling me that a Land Rover defender screen when cut would fit, which would give you the "E" mark . Certainly worth an ask.

                            Re: Cameron's Romero Build

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. A landrover screen can be cut down but I have yet to find one locally at reasonable cost. The E mark has to be E43R to show compliance with the standard and this has to be screenprinted onto the glass not etched (or so I have been told). I tried autowindscreens in shrewsbury and oswestry and they refused to do it!

And as for putting a roadster front on the Romero - yes it can be done. Needs new bonnet, nose and wings though, plus there are going to be loads of fiddly bits too but Romeros are so rare I am going to persevere with it. Brian Wesby kindly lent me a grille surround and I tried to make a mould from it but I was not adept enough to make it very well. A local GRP Specialist said it would cost £100 to make a mould and £50 to cast a new one. Pretty expensive I thought.

                              IVA manual says:
Note 2: “Safety Glazing” made from glass must be so constructed or treated that if fractured it does not fly into fragments likely to cause severe cuts. Each piece of glass must display the following relevant permanent marking applied by the glass manufacturer.
                              ECE Regulation 43

Does not say how the permanent marking is made.
