  • YKC sierra roadster fuel tank & sender seal

Hi guys, my YKC Sierra based raodster car continues to improve, new clutch, new carb and now I find, if not before, the fuel sender sensor fitting to the tank is leaking. There was always a slight whiff of fuel about the car but having got rid of the leaky Weber carb we have traced a leak now from the fuel tank sender.
I have tried to seal it with Mylomar, a new cork gasket, a new butyl rubber gasket but it still leaks. Not having built the car I have no idea where the tank came from, whether it was a YKC adapted part or whether the builder obtained his own. In the YKC generic build manual it says it is an escort tank, earlier posts suggest it is an escort van tank, whatever. I have tried to reseal the sender without removing the tank. I have examined the tank in situ with torch and a mirror to assess the appearance. I do not like the appearance of what I can see. The sender flange on the tank appears to have been brazed into place before fitting as does the filler pipe neck from the tank to the filler cap and inlet. After brazing, both the flange and the filler pipe appear to have been "finished" with a good dose of resin filler to smooth them off. This makes me suspect a less than satisfactory approach to the finish of this item.
Can anyone answer the following questions please a. If you built your car, was the tank of a similar cobbled up finish if it was a YKC item? b. If you fitted the tank yourself, was it fitted before the rear tub? c. Has anyone had the same problem, I know other types of roadster have had a similar leak. If you have, how did you fix it? d. Has anyone removed a tank post construction? e. The only simple way I can see out of this is to clean up the flange with the sender in place, degrease, grit paper lightly and cover the whole assembly in a good dollop of resin paste, post Chernobyl fashion?(this may seal the joint but potentially renders the sender inaccessible)

Any other suggestions welcome, thanks for looking, Patrick

Patrick, I'm not 100% sure about this, but if you look how the tank is bolted to the rails from under the car, if the tank flanges are under the rails then the tank will drop down when unbolted, if on the other hand the flanges are on top of the rails, I think the rear tub has to be removed.
    As I said I'm not 100% sure.

If its the same as the Roadster it will be a mk1 or mk2 escort van or escort estate fuel tank.
The sender unit float assembly has 4 cut outs on the outer edge, so you need to turn the assembly anti clock wise using a hammer and screw driver or a hard bit of wood as they are tight, until it releases its self. there is a rubber/cork gasket between the sender assembly and the tank.
I had one leaking from the fuel pipe that goes in the float sender unit and sealed it with metal paste as a tempory fix until I got a new one.
I replaced mine through the top without removing the tank.

Hi, thanks for that. Unfortunately my sender unit has a flange screwed to the tank top with 7 set screws. The unit simply pops out of the tank when the screws are removed. Its impossible to see whether the sender unit seal is leaking or the tank flange itself, which appears to be non-standard and brazed to the tank top. The only symptom is petrol exuding from the flange area, whether from an ineffective seal or possible perforations in the tank flange I can't tell. Its not copious, just enough to moisten the flange area and to give a petrol perfume to the car!

Can you get some talcum powder around the flange areas? If so it will soon show where the leak is from.

Re: YKC sierra roadster fuel tank & sender seal

I have the rectangular aluminium tank from YKC and I used the immersible pump from my Sierra GLS donor, I had to blank off the pre-drilled hole for the sender as well as create a large hole for the immersible pump. Using a "C" flange as in the picture is very easy provided you make sure all the holes bolt holes line up exactly.

Re: YKC sierra roadster fuel tank & sender seal

I have used silicon sealant with great effect, coating each side with vaseline(a thin smear) then a bead of said silicon on top of the vaseline, (one surface only) then make the joint with the second piece, not fully tightening down but ensuring the bead is flattened, then after 24 hours the piece can be tightened - benefit of the vaseline, the joint splits easily, use this method to seal the hatch on my r/c class m yacht, realise its a different app ie water, but it also works with petrol seals!!
                Just a suggestion

Re: YKC sierra roadster fuel tank & sender seal

It was the flange seal, no need to remove the tank after all, thanks for your reply, Patrick

Thanks for your answer Keith. Hylomar didn't want to do the job, it was the gasket and RTV auto silicone seems to have worked, Regards, Patrick

Thanks Cameron, talc showed it was the gasket leaking, briefly RTV auto silicone seems to have done the job, no more petrol fumes! Regards, Patrick

Thanks Tony, RTV auto silicone seems to have done the job, more or less as you described, regards, Patrick
