  • Fuel Filler Advice

I'm going to have to reposition the fuel filler on my car. The MX5 anti-surge valve works to a point but when driving enthusiastically petrol is still leaking out of the filler cap. I'd be interested in seeing pictures of how other Roadster owners have fitted their's.

    Re: Fuel Filler Advice

No sure if this helps as mine looks to be rather low down and looking inside the angle down to the tank is very slight so I'd be surprised if I didn't have fuel sloshing back up to the filler cap.

btw. Wish it still looked this smart!

Andy, I don't have a pic of the back of your car but do you have a very low filler ?

If so, look at old Pitstops/Tech Tips. My first Roadster Q249 FDF had a metal cylinder with a chamois washer which slid into the neck and stopped the slop

Sorry but I'm just going out and away for here days, I'm sure the details are there in an early magazine...alternatively when I get back I could put you in touch with the current owner of the car.

EDIT Crossed post with DB, yes that is in the same place as Q249

Mine's in a similar position to David's. I fitted the MX5 device that's supposed to stop fuel sloshing back up the filler neck but it's not 100% effective. I'm thinking of repositioning it up next to the spare wheel or further up on the side perhaps above the level of the rear light.

Had exactly the same problem with spirited driving. Had a Monza style fuel cap, replaced seals etc but still leaked.
Ended up raising the fuel filler by about 6" and it solved the problem. I used some hose from CBS.

The only problem is that there is a hole to filled with fibreglass that needs painting.

My tank is from the escort van but turned round and mounted as far to the right as possible then has a sweeping bend coming up to the cap

Since I got a new phone with a larger camera I found that the pictures were too big. Now I use a program called paint on my lap top to reduce them by 50% and it works fine. There are probably other maybe easier ways to deal with the pics but it works for me.

Hi Scott, I couldn't find the programme you use, paint on my lap top, so I Googled it and came up with some, er, interesting sites...

You can use http://www.picresize.com/ this allows you to upload your pic, crop add effects etc - you can even do a bulk upload if you wish. Nice little free app.

Just tried that app and it seems similar to "paint" which is on my windows 7 lap top.

                            Re: Fuel Filler Advice

This is how I currently have mine fitted, note that the pipe is almost horizontal from the tank to the body. I'm thinking of moving it up onto the back of the tub from the side alongside the spare wheel. The problem is that I'm having trouble locating the parts to complete it. The only way I can find of getting the pipework to head off down toward the tank at the right angle is to use a VW T2 camper van filler neck to body seal. Any ideas/suggestions welcome.

That looks remarkably similar to mine, but I have a lid on that box next to the tank, with two filtered fuel lines going in, maybe to two pumps as there's a two way switch on the dash. As for the pipe, I may need to do this as well so will do some research for us.
