      Re: Fuel Filler Advice

The problem I'm struggling with is that the filler neck needs to be at 90 degrees to the body otherwise it will stick out too far into the boot space.

You could consider lowering the fuel tank

Why not measure the distance from the ground to the bottom of the tank and then to the centre of the filler cap and I'll do the same to compare. I'll go for a fast run and if I don't have a leak and my tank to filler gap is greater that may give you some idea if it's worth lowering the tank.

I've measured it and it's 9.5" to the bottom of the tank and 21" to the centre of the fuel filler cap.

Mine are 9.5" to bottom of tank and 20.25" to centre line of cap. I also see some evidence of overflow, staining on the inside and what looks like mastic dissolved and run down from the cap where it seals to the bodywork.

Looks like I just added another job to my list.

                      Re: Fuel Filler Advice

                      Been watching this with interest.
When I built my Roadster with the Escort tank I also used the filler neck from the marina and fitted a CBS locking cap, model CL25. There's some on ebay now 371273551222 .
This has two valves, one that opens at a fairly low pressure to let air into the tank and one that opens at a higher pressure to prevent the tank from rupture.
They also have the advantage that if the car was to upsidedown fuel would not leak from the filler.
The vent from my tank is taken to the neck of the filler tube so the system is sealed, apart from the feed to the carbs.
The level from the top of the tank to the filler is about 61/2 in. and I have had no sign of any leakage even with a full tank and spirited cornering.
Some pics attached which may help. The pics show my new tank which is larger capacity and the top is about 11/2in. higher than the Escort tank.
My tank is located hard to the right with a toolbox on the left.

That cap looks like the type I have, will have to see if there's an identifier on it.

                          Re: Fuel Filler Advice

I think that it's the shallow angle to the tank that's making the difference. Mine is down near where your fog light is so it's almost a straight run out from the tank. In fact the last time I looked there was a pool of petrol collected in the join between the pipe and the connector for the cap (I have one of the monza flip up type caps). Once the parts I've ordered have arrived I'll mock it up and post picures of the revised arrangement.

I think this is a case of shutting the door after the horse has gone, but so what, these pics are worth putting on record for anyone in the future.

I spoke to Dave Peet, the current owner of my old Roadster, and he has kindly sent these pics of the way in which "fuel slop" was stopped.

The filler is at the same sort of level as yours. The steel cylinder insert twists slides easily out for refuelling. It has a small hole
to let any slopped fuel back down into the tank and a chamois washer to loosely seal at the top

My memory is that this idea was a good one

Yes it's too late for me but it might be helpful to someone else I had noticed that you can buy rubber bungs that look about the right size

So the parts have started to arrive

                                20150331_194643.jpg

Got an exhaust pipe reducer made to match the bug filler sleeve to the size of the Escort tank inlet. I can still use the MX5 anti-surge valve in the end. I've had it made long so the I can cut it down to size once I get the rubber hose with a 90 degree bend in it. I should have enough slack to position it where I want on the rear of the tub.

PS I may get a tail welded into the pipe so that I can attach the breather from the tank, I suspect that it would make it easier to fill.
