    Hi Dave,

I have a spare 2L Fiat TC sitting in my garage gathering dust together with 2 5 speed Fiat gearboxes. Contact me by e-mail at peterj7(at)gmail.com if you are interested. I am located near Cardiff.

        Hi,
My triumph-based roadster MNA2G has unfortunately encounterd some major problems with its 1585 fiat twin cam engine, and is quite regrettably now off the road. The 131-sourced engine suffered sudden oil starvation, and is in need of serious attention or replacement.

Do you know of any good sources for finding parts and/or knowledge about fiat twincam engines as applied to early Marlins? Any leads are very appreciated.

        Cheers,
        Ty

          Hi Ty,
When i was looking to recon an 1800cc twinc daverushton.co.uk quoted a total of about ?550 inc vat etc for rebore & bits. guy-croft.com carry a lot of original (non-race) parts if you find out what went wrong. They also have a great online article about a 1600 rebuild. There are often complete units on ebay. A FIAT specialist breaker once told me that the later twinc engines from Ritmo/Bravo/Brava use the same block so RWD gearboxes will fit - never tried so i don't know how true this is. Practical Classics did a full rebuild article over 2 copies about 5 years ago - I'll try & find it in the archives if you want.

            Re: fiat engine

            Hi Pete,
Thanks for all the leads - I've found the Practical Classics articles on their archives and ordered copies tonight. Cheers!

The tricky bit now is basically that the car is in Peterborough, at my family's home, and I'm based in London having made a mid-career move to return to uni to do a PGCE to become a secondary science teacher -- which also means a return to student funding levels (!) and not being near the car to work on it.
Nevertheless, I'm thinking of doing my best to get it sorted out around Easter Break, but I'm not sure if I've the time to really properly get in there and strip it all down and put it all back together with the lag for ordering parts and machining of various bits. I really don't want to have it all apart, then have to face picking the project up again much later... So all in all, I think I'd do well to find a good complete engine or have the engine reconditioned by a shop rather than make too much of a hash of the situation..

The quote of 550 isn't too bad at all for reconditioning the engine - what parts and labour was that to have included?

            Regards,
            Ty

              Re: fiat engine

              Ty,
The price I had was only for the bits and the rebore as follows:
              Rebore. ?12.95 per cyl
              Pistons ?49.83 Ea (std +.4mm +.6mm & 1mm oversize available)
              B\Ends ?27.06
              Head Gasket Set ?29.83
              Bottom Set Gaskets ?23.18
All + VAT at current rate.
I agree that it is probably better to get a good running unit as I did.
Good luck with the decision and also with the new career - I dropped out of the IT industry last year after 38+ years and now enjoy my new (as and when I want) job of executive private hire/chauffeuring. I bought a big Merc so not only is the job less stressful but I've got a great office!
