  • Mark 1 Roadster, can you identify this fuel tank?

    Hi

My fuel tank is leaking so I have removed it from the car. Wanted ideally to get a replacement. Can someone firstly tell me what the tank originally came from. I have looked at pictures of escort tanks as people say this was what most people put in their cars originally. My tank doesn't seem to match pictures on-line though. Can anyone recommend someone who could fabricate a tank for me. I did some measurements so included these if they help.

    Thanks

    Dan

the original tanks were from a mk1/2 escort van and yours isnt one of them! Yours is a spridget tank!

However getting a new bespoke one fabricated is straightforward, many members have done so and you will probably be contacted by some happy to recommend fabricators and give you a ball park figure of cost.
If you look at DCs thread on here you will see his project was an early triumph car and that had a Hillman Imp tank.

No problem, I would be interested to see how this tank fits as other members have asked about the spridget tank in the past and it may be a good solution as escort tanks are almost unobtainable. Any photos of the install would be great.

PS please do check with suppliers concerning dimensions etc before ordering.

Hi Dan, I started a thread on fuel tanks a few months ago. It can be found on this forum in "general car chat" page 3. It should give you a few pointers and perhaps you could add your experience when you get sorted out.

          Scott.

The Hillman Imp tank was originally recommended for the Mk1 we used a Reliant Robin tank in my sons Mk1

Do Triumph based roadsters suffer from the same inaccurate petrol gauge reading, the same as Marina based cars do?
if so its worth changing the sender to a compatible one if you go for a custom tank.

There was an article on fuel tanks for a roadster in Pitstop, not sure which issue, DC's index might find it.

It seems its the Ford tank not being compatible with Smiths gauges that causes the problem. Triumph, BL, Rootes and even Reliant all used the Lucas system with the 10v stabilizer .

Fairly recently, we fabricated a scratch-build #AstonMartin DB4GT Zagato fuel tank from original factory drawings.

The mole grips give you some idea of the size of that tank, I don't think a 35 gal tank would fit in my roadster !!

While we're on the subject of fuel tanks I read an alarming article about ethanol that said it would corrode aluminium as well as just about anything else!

I have had an aluminium tank for over ten years and it remains full of fuel throughout the winter, I have no leaks or problems with my fuel lines or tank and I run an EFi system with an intank fuel pump.
It may be like y2k and unleaded fuel and many other urban myths, but if you are concerned why not put an anti ethanol additive in your fuel for peace of mind. Incidentally the only thing I noticed on the unleaded front was that rubber fuel lines needed to be upgraded to the latest spec as the older rubber lines rotted away.

America has had higher ethanol fuels and they don't appear to have any problems, I think at the moment we only have 5% ethanol going up to 10%, I'm sure someone knows the ins and outs of it.

If you wikipedia E10 fuel you,ll find out all you ever wanted to know, google "fueltestkit.com" you'll find out all you NEVER wanted to know!
Basically, adding ethanol doubles the number of things that that "petrol" dissolves.

I think this was based on fuels with a greater than 10% Ethanol content (E10) which has been pretty much all that has been available in Europe since 2013.

The FBHVC still say Aluminium is a preferred material. Here or there

A Marina specific article, mostly taken from the FBHIC is here or there
