  • Noise from the front end.

    Hi,

My BMW Sportster developed a hissing or scraping noise from the right front wheel area under firm braking and when turning to the left.
I suspected the caliper/disc but after a strip down, clean and rebuild it is still making the noise. A drive with controlled braking episodes showed that the noise only appeared under medium to heavy pedal pressure and is more of a hiss than a scrape. The noise made on left hand bends with no braking is similar so a second idea occured to me which is that the Gaz shock on that side is leaking in some way because in both the braking and turning situations it is under compression.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause?

    Cheers,
    Coli Barratt

Hi COlin, do you have the disc covers still fitted? I had a car once which did that sort of thing, I stripped calipers, new pads and shims. Only when I put it back together did I notice the disc cover was loose and it was moving about when braking.

Yes Andy, I had exactly the same sound after I travelled on a re surfaced road. (chipping)
