  • Stoneleigh Show 1987

As I'm going to the Stoneleigh show this weekend I thought I'd scan a few pictures of the last time I went in 1987 !

Excuse the photography, there were no megapixels in those days

Me and an old friend Ken Dando (he had built two Marlins & ran MOC Monthly meet in Leicestershire), also my Marlin 928CDU
BTW I think the Marlin has probably aged better than me !

    Various Marlin Roadsters

    Marlin046.jpg

    Ken's Sylva Leader - VERY quick !
    Marlin044.jpg

A great Dutton B Type (?) owned by another old friend John Tighe, this was the best looking Dutton ever, not too sure Lotus/Caterham would approve ..
    Marlin040.jpg

Enjoy the pics, if you see me at the weekend come and say hello !

    Regards .. Richard

        Stoneleigh Old Photos 8.jpg

.............. and then had several years break for building a house, and having a few of these "helpers" come along?

        Stoneleigh Old Photos 10.jpg

and turned it into this.............. in 1997, with an MOT, and ready to set off to get it registered at my local DVLA office (they don't exist any more!)

I recognised Q285 AVO as being the Roadster built by chap here in Derby by the name of Michael Clamp. He still has it I believe though it hasn't seen the road in a number of years.

I still remember this Roadster too - it had a unique radiator grille, which I unashamedly copied using 3 Rover P6 grilles.

                    Stoneleigh Old Photos 4.jpg

It also had a special fuel filler cap - not sure if it was proprietary, or had been self made, but I would have liked one like it............. and I really liked the Minilite wheels, which I went on to fit on my Roadster. ( I used a magnifying glass to read the name on these wheels from the photograph above to find out what they were ....."Carmonia", and found they were made by Twogates Wheels in Telford).
It was quite an inspirational car for me.

Dad borrowed the gardener's flat bed Sherpa from Longbridge & we used that to collect our kit.

I'm going to suggest to the MOC committee, and idea for an alternative 2018 calendar, "Owners and partners sitting on their drives in a Marlin body-tub" could be a best seller & we have the first three months of the year sorted already !

We had to move the Marlin across town when it was just a rolling chassis. Did we put it on a trailer... no! I towed it with my dad clinging onto the steering wheel with his hair blowing in the wind... I don't think he was making brum brum noises :-D
