Ok, the N/S bearing in my steering rack is an MOT fail. I have dismembered the front of the car to get the rack out. Haynes says ' After removing the swivel ,Remove the locating screw and then remove the bearing.' This is before any other dismantling. I haven't tried yet, should it just drop out or what?

Re: Steering rack bearing
I thought it was a Marina one, it was very nearly right just the hole was slack on the shaft. My rack is one of the 21H 6792s . Now its stripped ,old bush out and waiting for the postman. When I stripped it the rack buffer was seized and needed a bit of tapping to remove it. I gave it a smear of oil and its Ok now. Maybe if the rack had had some oil in it things would have been better. One of the bellows was split. Now that the front is off all the wiring is exposed, it looked Ok before but now it needs tidying . Do I go the whole hog and fit a decent sized radiator while I'm at it? Will it be ready this summer?

Re: Steering rack bearing
We did have a few MK 1 and 2 Marina racks in stock at our factory so will check to see if any are left . I might be able to still supply bushes and can recondition old units to a high standard if required www/cpsdrivelink.co.uk

Re: Steering rack bearing
Bush arrived from Chris Weedon this morning. Ordered Monday afternoon, excellent service. Bush is a perfect fit . Anybody had experience of Honda Civic 92-200 3 core Ally radiators on ebay @about £59? Probably Chinese.

Re: Steering rack bearing
Hello Dave,
I am just sorting out fitting one of these to my marina 1700 marlin build at the moment, they seem very well made. They are a little to big to fit above the chassis cross member and under the nose cone but it will fit behind the cross member still keeping the cores fully in the airflow. I bought the rad complete with electric fan and shroud this will not fit between the the cross member and the steering rack. But you can turn the fan blade round and jury rig the shroud to fit in front of the rad above the chassis member. I will post to the site pictures and info in the near future once I have the mount brackets welded in place. I bought mine from a gent in Portsmouth on ebay and had good service just under £80.00 for rad and fan unit. I think darth vader is fitting one in his rebuild post. I checked and it will fit in a triumph based marlin might be a bit tight with the straight 6 fitted.

Re: Steering rack bearing
Cheers for that Phild,. But I now have a problem, what radiator have I got? O/A height 467mm (18 1/2 ") Width 325mm (13 1/4) with 30mm ish with inlet and outlet on the nearside of the car . Not where old minis had them. and the (blanked off) filler towards the O/S right. Worriseet orf ?

Re: Steering rack bearing
My gut feel is that, depending on your build, it’s better to get a Viva rad re-cored with an extra core, rather than to spend time and effort playing around with new brackets etc. to fit a Civic rad assuming it’s an updated one!
My personal findings were that sealing up the area around a re-cored Viva rad, ensuring that the air flow that goes through the grille goes through the rad and not over or under it.
It only works when the car is going forward, in heavy traffic or when stationary, a fan is essential but not necessarily a full size one.
An ally rad works fine for bling factor, if that’s what you are aiming for. A truly custom radiator to make full use of the available space is probably the way to go, but it carries a price penalty and no guarantees.
It feels to me that a Civic rad is a compromise over a re-cored+ Viva rad for little practical benefit.MOC member since 05/97

Re: Steering rack bearing
Hi Steve. If the rad I have is a Viva then it stays. It is well sealed around the edges but I was wondering whether to add 'Alfa' slots around the cowl. I want brum brum factor . I am not aiming for bling. I think most of my overheating problems were down to timing and badly set carbs. I have a pusher fan on the rad and a blower fan on the bulkhead to move some engine room heat but I am having a rethink on that.
