    Re: Steering rack bearing

I disagree with Steve on this point. The cheaper civic rad is a really good upgrade. New mounting brackets means bending a piece of flat ally. the sealing of the rad is as good as with the viva. I never had one bit of overheating once I fitted it. The cost is about half (or less) of having the viva rad re-cored. Electric fan (some like to fit an override switch too) never gave me any problems and always cut in at the right time. Its a nice simple project if you ask me. I made the filling easy by using a remote expansion bottle on the bulkhead.

      Re: Steering rack bearing

Thanks for all the help and advice but for now I'm putting it back together with the original rad and see how we go. I suppose that his is one of the joys of someone else's build. I got this as a non running project that I have been thinking had never been right. But its getting there . I was hoping to re-spray it this winter but not now. There are cracks in the wings but they can wait. It has 1990's patina. I would rather drive it than rebuild it in the summer. It was a toss up whether to strip it and rebuild it this summer with the Locust on the road. I may yet change my mind and do that. I still want to put a couple of stays under the wings and revamp the dashboard wit the 4 clock Marina instruments. For a sensible normal car we do have a Berli actually a Citroen Berlingo.

You neglected to add the additional hoses and fittings to suit the new inlet/outlet positions, they are not free.

From my perspective I took the opportunity to have a new drain valve fitted in the bottom tanks and a few tweaks so that the rad cap was properly functioning for an expansion bottle that actually sucked the water back in.

The tweaks were included in the original quote just for the re-core.

I dont recall the cost, it was a good few years ago, so not necessarily necessary.

          Re: Steering rack bearing

Bit late to the discussion but I too have been pondering the merits or otherwise of a rad swap.
I just spoke to the guy who did my 3-core Viva 20+ years ago to check today's price for the same job (as mine needs a refurb). He reckoned £130-150 and he'll add a fan switch boss for me.
I also looked at the Coolex Transformer range...which is very nice, but with pipes where I want them, a fan & 55mm core, comes in north of £250...and I'd want some threaded bosses adding to make mounting easier.
Their Escort rad may also fit (if you lose the side brackets), and that comes in somewhat cheaper around £190 with a filler.
The Civic option is financially attractive so long as the quality is OK...but to avoid knocking up new mounts & faffing with pipework I think I'll be dropping the Viva in for a refresh next week...it's never overheated on me yet.
