An engine driven one or electric Don? I have an electric one you can have if you want it.

First port of call is https://kvisit.com/S9dPbAw

Beware engine driven fans from MGB/Marina, assuming a 1.8.
Their diameter and propensity to pull air through the rad, can cause sufficient deflection to drag the fan towards the steering rack mountings, with the destruction of the fan blades at beyond tickover revs.

Many thanks for the kind offer but i already have an electric fan (spal) but i wondered if the small engine fan may help move the air around the engine bay a bit more. I have recently had running problems after the car has stood for about 10 minutes (when hot) or in traffic, it coughs and farts dreadfully. And in the warm weather this weekend the bonnet was so hot i could not hold my hand on it. i know it needs a tune up but . . .

i think i need to read the document above and do a few mods.

it already has a triple core rad and side louvres.

Its fuel vapourisation I suspect that is causing your poor running that and the unleaded fuel eating the carbs from the inside out!!

            Re: fan question

yep - thats my thought too - this weeks projects are exhaust wrap on the tubular bits which super heat the carbs from underneath and moving the carburettor connecting fuel line down away from near the rocker cover and the red hot bonnet. (plus possibly a couple of indy style bonnet vents like on my other trials version)

              Re: fan question

It could be fuel vapourisation but I would suspect that the fuel pump may be suffering from the effects of ethanol.
EBay sources may be a bit dodgy, Burlen supply SU ethanol ready pumps.

I assume that your fan stat or manual switch are working.

                Re: fan question

brand new facet electric fuel pump and yes fan switched on and off quite happily - in traffic its on, once moving it turns off when cooled a bit - its going to sound odd, but the water temp never seems to get too high (85-90 at most) and i have a new sender too. its just under the bonnet the temperature seems so very high.

Anyway reducing radiated and convected heat from the exhaust and re positioning carb fuel linking pipe is my first stop. i have raised the engine around 1/2 inch which of course puts the currently high routed pipe in the hottest air?! so it may be a simple as that.

its all booked in for its rolling road tune up with an SU specialist too

Have you got a carb heat shield? - very easy to make and very effective. Ensure it protects as much of the fuel system as it can.

                    Re: fan question

Have you the insulator blocks that should be fitted between the inlet manifold and carbs? These are often omitted or at best cut down in order to install twin carbs within the confines of the side panels.

                      Re: fan question

I think the exhaust wrap and moving/insulating the fuel pipe along with the heat shield will more than sort it! Before I sold the garage a couple of years ago we were having issues with MK2s etc, luckily the exhaust manifold is on the opposite side but modern petrol is very volatile! I have even converted one to LPG to eradicate the problem, it was driving the owner nuts and on the plus side it saved him money as well
