    2. Find a tame tester, as it was originally built with a 1989 carberettor based engine from a 1989 donor. (MOT rules say if you replace the engine then the test is based on the oldest component, I can argue that since it is on a G plate then altough it was registered in 2009 it is really a 1989 vehicle)
    3. Try to get DVLA to define the emissions on the log book based on the original engine.

There is one remaining option. Take the engine/gearbox out, scrap the Marlin and try to find a Mk1 or Mk 2 Escort, Midget or MGB to stuff it in.
I thought the regs were to test as per the engine fitted? or it used to be. I have a 1997 engine fitted in a 1997 car it passes emissions because it was designed right. I dont want to be labelled as a gross polluter and for the sake of our hobby neither should anyone else. Times are changing and my area is a high pollution area, what this means I have yet to find out but it will no doubt mean a restriction on use, I would hate that to be an outright ban

Check the V5c too. Section 3 special note on the front. It may specify the limits for your vehicle.

              Latest

              MOT passed.

Drove it for around 20 miles and then a quick check with my mechanic and home.

Now before I go to Le Mans Classic

              1. Change coolent
              2. Fit new Alternator
              3. Tidy engine hole
              4. Thrash the hell out of it
              5. Fix things that break

              Etc, etc.

              Adrian

              The Marlin failed her MOT.

Believe me I am the happiest person in the world.

She only failed because the handbrake cable broke and a slight leak from one of the brake pipes.

My mechanic John is going to sort them for me and I will be driving the beast on Monday.

              I can't
              stop smiling,

John took me out on a 10 mile run and she doesn't rattle, she steers well, brakes well and sounds absolutely glorious.

Now for a bottle of wine and try and wipe the smile off my face

No need for breathtesters, they were abandoned here(France), never having got off the ground, 2 or 3 years ago, however regs require a set of spare bulbs on board - strange really, the local plods can stop and fine miscreants, but never do judging by the number of one eyed monsters(front and rear) circulating - strange nation!!

That requirement - spare bulbs is what killed the old sealed beam headlamps
Shame as back then the headlamps with seperate bulbs used to rust something awful

My experience in Spain regarding spare bulbs is contradictory. Like spare tyres etc, where the law says you cannot have mimarched tyres on your car but some cars have different sizes front and rear, and then the complication of spare tyre. My Mercedes carries a spare tyre, but it’s uninflated. Once inflated it no longer fits in the boot but it’s a dramatically different tyre type.
But to return to bulbs, again on my Mercedes you have to remove the front tyre, remove the inner wing/splash guard just to access the rear of the headlight cluster, but, it is also illegal to work on your car, to change a tyre or even to wash it on the roadside. So every insurance comes with breakdown recovery and you are expected to call them even for a blown bulb, unless you are at home with off street parking.
