I recently bought a pre-built Marlin 5exi. Although I can engage all gears I have to go way to the left for 1st & wnd then well over the tha right for 3 4 & 5. There is about five inches of free play at the top of the gearstick and in neutral it feels like striking a pudding. Engaging reverse often results in a distinct clunk. Any help to sort would be welcome. Thanks.

I have moved this post from tech tips as it is more likely to be seen by another 5exi owner here.

Hi, wrote an article for the Pitstop magazine, Issue 198 March/April 2017. You can download this off the MOC site in the members only section.
Had very similar symptoms which I resolved.
Have a read, it may help.

You're welcome. Hope it works out for you!.
Just note that it wasn't an overnight thing for me, indeed, quite a lot of work was involved but don't let that put you off.
Keep us posted on your progress.

Hi John, welcome to ownership...out of interest which car did you buy and whereabouts in the country are you.

As Leon says gearchange can be improved and he has done it ! I had similar issues on mine originally when I built it...solved by moving the cable pivot points..this is to gain more movement at the gearbox end for less input at the stick. From memory, try repositioning the pivot on the end of the shift rod (rear bulkhead) from downward pointing to upward pointing. This improved mine quite a bit

    Cheers Rich
