    Thanks folks. I have the tripod, tin can version, so I will remove them at the end of the summer and decide if it is to be stretchy boots or new shafts, which seem to be available at various prices.

      Hi, an update in case anyone else has a similar situation. I removed the drive shafts this week and could not detect any play in the joints, so bought some stretchy boot kits with a fitting cone (ebay). I cut the cone down at the wide end so the boots didn't have to stretch more than necessary.
      Even though it looks impossible, they really do stretch enough to get the narrow end over the joint. All in all a surprisingly straightforward job, but messy given the amount of grease needed to keep the cone lubricated.
