I'm sure this has been asked before, but I want to change my ford 4 speed to a five speed. I've got the five speed gearbox, but I presume it's a bit longer than the four speed. So the propshaft will be too long.?
Can someone advise me or point me in the right direction about shortening, or making a new one up first before putting the car up on the ramp.
    It's a YKC 1600 Sierra based car.

Speaking from the shallows of my wisdom, I wouldmeasure the existing gearbox, then the new one. The difference is the propshaft modification. Or fit the gearbox then see how the propshaft needs modification. Its got to be done anyway. I believe a propshaft specialist is the best way to go. They will ask the questions to do what you need.

Thank you for that. I wondered what it said in the build manual

I can recommend North West Propshafts. They made me a propshaft by mail order to suit the same Ford 5 speed box and Sierra diff that you have.

Hi Chris. There is a place in Bath that do propshafts but I will have to look up the name.

BTW I have replied to your PM. SW Meet for December is this coming a Sunday at Dartington Shops Christmas Fair. See SW Meets page for details.

It would be good to see any other local Marlin owners too. Peter.

    Hi Guys

There are a couple of things that you need to know

Propshafts have two UJ's and a sliding joint - you need all three - some gearboxes have the sliding bit as part of the gearbox - it only needs to slide about 8 mm
I think the Ford 4 speed has the sliding joint as part of the gearbox - no idea at all about the 5 speed

The front (sleeve) which locates on the splined shaft of the gearbox also differs between 2000 and 1600. (smaller dia )

If you are in the south west then contact these guys in Bristol. They have done a couple for me over the years. They did the original roadster prop when I built with 1300 engine back in 1986 then re-imagined it for the Fiat twin cam transplant in 1990.
They were good back then and still get great reviews on other forums today.

The company that I was trying to remember is Chard Engineering as per Jon cox earlier info in post #8.
