    Re: Marlin Roadster Registration Advice

JWP 39K comes up as a Volvo and JWP 39X a beige Austin. Nothing on JMP 39K or X.

Having tried to enhance the image I think it is 30K...and JMP 30K comes back as a 1972 2l Alfa.
      Marlin Roadster, LWB...1860 B Series + Ford Type 9
Renault Espace 54mm front calipers, vented discs, cycle wings and adjustable tie-bars.

Bit of a long shot but..........
JMP 38K comes up as a 1972 Alfa Romeo.
As the advert states it has an Alfa engine then this would make sense, just incorrectly registered.

Mk2 SWB Marina Roadster with a 1800 Fiat Twin Cam engine and 5 speed Abarth gearbox built in 1987
        - I have no idea what I am talking about........ but my advice is always free! -

          Re: Marlin Roadster Registration Advice

          That's interesting!!

Firstly the eBay listing in Bristol is the same car, no doubt about it i am Gloucester based, this listing was based in Bristol, the tires etc are still the same

Second, the Which Kit listing image has got the same 'bulge' on the bonnet to make clearance for something (presumably carburetors)
this 'bulge' isn't very common for what i can tell as i have found no other images with a similar feature, so definitely has the potential to be the same car!

I'm amazed about the quantity on information found so far!
lil_red_roadster - that reg number would correlate with the build at the time being an Alfa,
Also another oddity is the reg number JNP 39X produces a red Ford Escort and in the pile of stuff that came with it was a set of ford wing mirrors, ford steering wheel, and a 1.3 (think escort) engine.
Along with a for Anglia plate (but no V5).
          Very strange situation.

What I'm unsure about is if I do end up identifying the reg plate for this car, without the Chassis number I'm kinda stuck aren't I?
As to get a V5 replacement I need the vehicle details and VIN...
Also I don't have the Alfa engine, (I have got an MGB engine and gearbox)

Would there be any beneficial result in chasing the reg plate number of this vehicle?
Or without the chassis number am I going nowhere?
The registration side of things is not an area I now a lot about.

It seems like the car has been registered as other vehicles, can that be done?
As I have an MGB engine and gearbox , and potentially the car has an MGB diff (according the that eBay listing found) could i pass it off as being an MGB?

Sorry for all the questions, all of your help has been great so far!!

            Re: Marlin Roadster Registration Advice

That’s not an MGB diff to my eyes!

Many Marina based Roadsters are misidentified as MGB based because of the sheer volume of B series engines in existence.
The Marina and MGB main engines are indeed similar but there are strategic differences with the ancillaries especially from the rear on the block aft. The back plate, starter motor, flywheel and clutch mechanism being very different and not interchangeable with each other.
The Marina is a bit of a parts bin car, mostly Triumph derived from the gearbox through to the back axle, which is essentially filled with a Triumph gearset and bearings.

              Re: Marlin Roadster Registration Advice

              Hi stevejgreen,

Thank you for informing me! ill remember that its a marina diff,
I do have an MGB engine and gearbox as I bought it separately for this project before i even got the marlin!
When i measure up on the weekend its going to need some modification to allow the MGB gearbox to fit as you right its a lot bigger!
Have people fitted the B box in one of these before or just stuck with the marina box?

Any ideas about if it's worth chasing the old registration without having a VIN?

At the moment in time I'm thinking this project will end like this:
Get an New VIN (hopefully that's easy)
Modify the hell out of it to make it comply with IVA
              Get it tested
              Get it registered
              Get it MOT'd
Ta-da (Long way down the road!!!)

              anyone think differently?

              cheers all!

                Re: Marlin Roadster Registration Advice

Other than historical interest, the original chassis no is not required if you are going to the trouble of putting it through IVA. You can make up any number you like, preferably with the number of digits to suit.

                  I don't think so, see https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registrat...ication-number
BTW the chassis number has to be stamped on the car and the IVA manual defines how and where (I know because my Cabrio failed IVA because the chassis number did not conform to the regulations)

Just popped an email to DVLA to start the request for a new VIN, i can see this project being a pain in the bum... BUT its a learning opportunity!!!

copperleaves11 my neighbor said the same thing but i think it's changed (will fin out more soon i hope) the DVLA give you one by the way the website reads.

A long time ago in a place not far away (my drive) I built a Spartan Treka. I did invent a VIN for it, CAC-01 (my initials plus a number) My wife wasn't happy when she realised the last in the sequence could be CAC-99

If you know the chassis number and the VIN number then I suggest you simply make your own Chassis and VIN plates - I'm sure that you can make something that would be nearly impossible to tell apart - and then "rust" and repaint

there are outfits here in france that offer that service, in fact used them to produce a plate for my berly after the French mot equiv questioned the rather amateurish original!

I bought the blank VIN Plate from the club goods and using a friends stamp set made my own.

                            Simples.

My roadster early marina based car has aluminium fill in panels underneath the doors. The chassis number is stamped into the top of this panel (passenger side). It might be worth looking there for a chassis number.

                                Good evening all!

Sorry for the late reply! Thank you for yours!

Thank you for the info on the VIN plates, but unfortunately I do not have the Vehicle Identification Number itself as the previous owner welded a bracket where it is supposed to be...

Thank you for the image, that is definitely somewhere I will check on Saturday!

On the bright side I have received today a new VIN from the DVLA!! WHOOP!

So now it has an identity I am happier to spend some money and time to begone making this meet the IVA requirements!

Question: has anyone made a Marlin IVA compatible before?
As I'm wondering if I make a guide from my experience as I go would it be useful?
