  • 2LT PINTO ENGINE AND TYPE 9 GEARBOX

HAS ANYONE GOT OR FITTED A 2LT PINTO ENGINE AND A 5 SPEED TYPE 9 GEARBOX TO A MARLIN ROADSTER SWB ?. AND IS THERE ANY SNAGS TO WHATCH OUT FOR. DOES THE PINTO SUMP NEED SHORTENING AS THE ENGINE IS TALLER THAN MY 1800 B SERIES ENGINE. IF THIS PROJECT GOES AHEAD THEN I WILL HAVE 1800 B SERIES ENGINE (COMPLETE REBUILD 600 MILES) AND A 4 SPEED MARINA BOX FOR SALE BUT I WILL ADVISE YOU LATER ON THIS.

    Hi Bob

I have a Pinto engine in my LWB and the chap I bought it off informed me it did have the sump shortened. I am happy to measure the height of my sump if you know what the standard one is to compare.

My son had a lwb with tuned pinto-sump was standard but for increased clearance you can get a shallower alloy one just need the oil pick up pipe and dipstick to suit.you also need to convert to cable clutch and move exhaust to other side amongst other things, if you've not already realised!

I HAVE GONE THE 2LT PINTO AND TYPE 9 GEARBOX ROUTE AS I JUST BOUGHT TODAY AND I GUESS MY PROBLEMS ARE JUST STARTING.

          ALAN,

THANKS FOR COMMENTS. I HAVE LOOKED AT CONVERTING A FORD TYPE 9 GEARBOX TO FIT MY B SERIES BUT THE COSTS ARE BETWEEN ?600 - ?800 FOR A KIT DEPENDING WHO YOU BUY IT FROM PLUS THE GEARBOX COST.
PATRICK, COULD YOU PLEASE PASS-ON TO ME YOUR GROUND CLEARANCE AND THE MEASUREMENTS AND PHOTOS IF POS OF YOUR SUMP SO WHEN I START THIS PROJECT IN THE NEXT I CAN GET ORGANISED.
COULD ANYONE PASS ON ANY PHOTOS OF YOUR PINTO ENGINE SHOWING THE ENGINE MOUNTS USED AND AIR FILTERS SYSTEM USED AS IT LOOKS AS THE TWIN WEBER IS CLOSE TO THE BONNET.

My Mk 2 has a 2 ltr Pinto with the standard sump, box and was used trials with 15" wheels. Only concern is the clearence for the carb. I had to put a small bump in the bonnet to get it all in. It also took a bit of work to get the front rad connection in even with electric fan. but it does fit and it is well worth the effort.

              Hi Bob

I had no luck with attaching pics, I'll try again later.

My sump is an alloy one so I assume it's the shallower version as Alan refers to. It measures appx 6" deep from the mating surface with ground clearence of just under 7".

The air filter is a very flat pipercross one but it all fits under the bonnet ok.

Pinto conversion,I just remembered the standard exhaust fits ok but is cast iron and weighs a ton so use the 1600 cortina multibranch and some fit straight in some need a small modification. Another thing was the cooling the Pinto does need a good radiator if you use it. I found the morris maxi radiator fitted straight in and could cope with easy

                      Thanks Roger,
I have had the engine and gearbox in and out 4 times todays due to removing/grinding off the old Marina 1800 engine brackets and rewelding in the same place with a 3/8th packing plate to the Marina 1300 engine fixing/welding points on the chassis.
